Engine rebuild info request

So, I'm looking to buy a second engine to rebuild and drop in my 07 grand prix. When talking to a machine shop, what should I ask question wise to see if they're good, and what options should I ask them to perform on the block to get it ready to build? Thanks for the help guys.

These engines are so reliable stock it is not recommended to rebuild them because most people don't have luck with it. People push these blocks to 700+ whp on stock bottom end so if you need to just get a a low mileage one like dsmuts mentioned and throw that in.

I was actually hoping to build a 500ish hp engine, it was suggested that I rebuild the lower because of how high I wanted to go. If I am going to leave the lower stock, how much of it do you suggest I leave stock? I'm buying a n/a and looking to put a xpz cam in it first off. Should I get that professionally installed? I've yet to do anything like this but I really want to try, any help is greatly appreciated! Support is always helpful.

if you want 500 hp you want a turbo, a sc will not get you there.

and just drop a used block in there. its not worth the shop costs and parts for no reason.

you will need an L67 or L32 for sure to support that much power. if it was me, and I wasn't driving the car every day, I would drop the engine and transmission out because the heads will have to come off for machine work, and the transmission will have to be built with some amazing parts to support that much power. then you can send the transmission to tep and the engine to whoever is going to cam it and put the heads on.

What scotty meens is the xpz is a blower cam. Your not going to reach 500 whp with a blower. Expect to spend around 4-7k to get to those goals and then 5+k for a trans build.

exactly. if your gonna go big plan big from the start, still dont need a rebuilt bottom end tho. but a pile of inheritance money does help lol

L36 bottom end would hold just fine. Stay away from the L26 if you want that much power or you will end up with this.

This is a side by side comparison of the l36 and l67 connecting rod. L67 on top L36 on bottom.

L36 is stronger than the newer L26? I thought it was reverse. IIRC the rods were skinnier in the L26 but made of a stronger metal...

Scotty, I want my L36 back.......

I know this is going to be one of those comments that makes a thread go nuts but.... I was planning on putting a htv 1900 in as the blower. I know it's a big project but like any real dreamer says "go big or go home". My car is a daily driver right now hence me wanting a second engine to do the mods to. I'll consider a turbo if I can't get the htv to do what I want tho.

I know I'm going to need luck, there is a guy on 3800 pro that has done this already, I'm hoping he can steer me parts wise in the right direction.

From my understanding powdered metal sucks for connecting rods. Especially when they look like toothpicks.
