Anyone have any preferences on a scanner? I think I'll be buying one cause my buddy and I want to fix W-body cars up.
 


I also have an Oreilly cheap-o. Had it for a year and a half and it works good. All the basics. Read codes and clear them
 
I got the ine with obd 1 and obd 2 connection. I have 3 pre 1995 gm cars. It sucks that I have to program obd 1 to work lol. If your looking for "the best reader" you will need much deeper pockets. Just stick with the cheap one if you use it for one car.
 


If your wanting to fix up cars your going to want to get one that can show you what your sensors are reading, fuel trims, ect. It can take a lot of the guess work out of fixing cars and youll save yourself money in the long run because you wont be throwing parts at the car.
 
yeah, im not looking for something that's a general code reader. I want something that's for ABS, Airbags, etc. when i mean "fix" i mean cars that have been in accidents, so thats why i need the detailed code reader. i don't like guessing when it comes to sensors, they're not cheap sometimes.
 


if you want laptop based go autoenginuity. It has some great features and updates are cheap compared to anything from snap-on or genysis.

stand alone handheld scan tools; launch CRP123 does everything but body codes for around $300. I have the launch c-readervi and its great for powertrain and cost only $100.

If you need it all, a used genysis is one way to go but don't get the black power button models as they are no longer serviceable from otc.

Yeah I just took a look at it now, looks like it would help me with what I'm doing. I'm going to read more into the two. If I'm fixing up cars, which I already have a 04 Comp G on the way, I'll need a scanner. I have an ABS/Traction Control light on this Comp G and I have the two drivers and passenger air bag deployed on the car, so I'll have to see what impact sensors need to be changed and that's what I want this scanner for. the OTC looks like it'll pick it up but if the computer base one will allow me to upgrade the software through time, I'd wanna go with that. I have no problems using my laptop as a scanner anyways, I'll be eventually using a HPT with it so may as well have both tools on one thing. I'll read into more of the two, thanks for all the suggestions, i didn't wanna buy any cheap Chinese crap so I thought I'd thread this. thanks guys!
 


I'll see if i can maybe contact HPT or someone that can give me all the information on that. I really want a HPT because im assuming ill need to flash my car and i dont have any place that i trust in my city to do that.

Alright, so I sent an e-mail to HPT and they said that both of their products wont pick up on ABS or the Airbag system codes. They said that only the Engine and Transmission controllers are supported. They totally should look into getting codes throughout the whole system for GM vehicles and then they'd be giving us a sweet program, all in one kind of thing.

I actually just came across a Equus Innova 3160. anyone ever handle one of these things? on Ebay it gives a brief description on what it can do and it actually shows a wheel speed sensor as an advertisement on the units screen, ill post the ebay link so you can see for yourselves.
