2006 Grand Prix GT: What pulley is this? (Video)

cameron92

Grand Pricks
My car has been making an awful grinding noise at around 2K RPM. I think I may have found the problem, whatever pulley this is, is slipping, I'm pretty sure its the A/C compressor(the one at the bottom). I dont have a belt diagram or a owners manual to confirm. Thanks ahead of time, heres the video, skip to around :20 seconds to get a better view:

Do you think this would make a grinding sound?

The one at the very very bottom that hardly seems to spin at all is the AC compressor's clutch/pulley.

The clutch looks like its slowly rotating with the pulley but at like a 1 turn per every few thousand of the a/c's pulley itself.

Try engaging the ac compressor and see if the noise stops.

I have engaged the compressor and it definately seems to quiet down. But it still can be heard sometimes, maybe when it slips?

Is the clutch supposed to slowly rotate like that?

When I engage the a/c, the clutch engages and spins fine as far as I can see. I dont think its frozen as the a/c still works.

I can still hear the sound with the a/c on sometimes, not as much though and not as loud.

Either replace the ac compressor clutch, from what I have read its a real huge pain to replace, or get a new compressor, iirc they are ~$170 from Rockauto, or you could try a used one from a junkyard.

you need a new compressor, you can see the center of the clutch turning little by little in the vid you posted.

you can try spraying wd 40 or some spray grease in the clutch under the pulley area there little holes you can spray into.

Thanks, I'll give the wd40 a go, hopefully it quiets it down.

When mom and dad's van started doing this I had to replace the ac compressor about 2 months later because it locked up. Dad replaced the battery thinking it was bad but I took the belt off and the van started up fine. New compressor and all is well.
