00 gt top swap trans totalled?

I was driving my top swapped grand prix gt today and the throttle got stuck wide open, looking back im guessing it got hung up on my floor mat as its happened before. I immediately put it in neutral but must not have gotten it all the way in or maybe i bumped it back idk it happened very fast. It basically was a full rpm neutral drop to drive while moving. It now will not go into any gear as if its stuck in neutral. No grinding unless I go to park and it grinds/clicks a little bit. Im expecting the worse and that my tranny is shot but is it possible that i should be looking for something else that could be the issue? Also if i replace the trans i would just assume to find a 4t65-hd from a gtp, is there any difference in swapping one in other than the tune?

A good chance the input shaft snapped.

The 4T65e and th 4T65e HD are literally exactly the same besides the gear ratio and HD diff, there really is not advantage to swapping in a HD trans. Both will handle the same power levels untill they let go.

I would just get a somewhat beefed up trans if you are wanting to keep running a modded car, that way you know its not going to die on you.

That sucks.. going to a gtp is a different gear ratio so ya you will need a tune of some sort.
That being said you should of just shut the car off and pulled over.
Good luck man

Also in park the car still rolls. The first things i think of is the chain or an axle. Whats the best way to diagnose this, If i spin one wheel the other should spin opposite right? If the wheel doesnt spin could i assume an axle or if the chain is bad would i see this same thing?

Thats exactly what i was trying to do but somehow in the frenzy i ended up in gear :s

Well the wheels are off and the first thing we noticed is that with one wheel still on the ground you could spin the wheel that was in the air. With both corners up and wheels off you can spin either side without turning the other axle at all. The drivers side did not look too bad other than i noticed the boot clamp closest to the trans was off. The passenger side on the other hand concerns me, the tripod or whatever its called where the axle attaches is not sticking straight out like on the drivers side but it rotates freely up, down, side to side. It almost looks like it would just fall out if it were not attached to the axle. What does this mean? output shaft? just the tripod? Easy to fix?

My money is on broken half shaft. I had the same exact issue. No gears, everything neutral after showing off in my 2000. Diagnosis, broken passenger side half shaft. Easy cheap fix. Just pull it out and see what it looks like.

This may sound stupid but can you explain why the tripod attached to the trans would swivel if it was just the axle?

Broken axles wont stop the car from going into a gear, it will just stop it from moving.

I still think the input shaft snapped when it did the neutral drop.

Mine would go into any gear, but obviously would not move. So regardless of what gear was selected it would be like neutral. Only one way to find out...pull the half shaft/cv/axle and see if it is still in one piece. That video makes me believe it is not.

I believe it is going into gear, just not moving as stated above. It just clicks when going into park, possibly because the transmittion is spinning because of no resistance while trying to go into park. Ill look into it further and let you know what I find. Thanks for everyone's input! :)

Well i dont have the tools here to tear it apart yet but i was able to pull the axle out of the way. Here is a pic of the axle snapped off inside the trans. I did a quik test and when you put the car in drive and reverse the axle still spins inside. Although it also spins in neutral which im assuming is because there is no resistance from the axle/wheel to stop it? It goes in park but clicks a few times due to the axle still spinning.

Also does anybody have any better idea for getting that out? I was thinking drilling and tapping it to thread a bolt in for something to grab onto but i really dont want those shavings in my trans :s

Maybe JB weld some threaded rod to the center of the broken axle shaft, stick a thick washer on it and then a nut at the end of the rod to keep the washer in place and then use a slide hammer to pop it loose. Either that or have someone weld it to it, but not sure if all that heat would be good for the seals around it.

Technically it only has to hold enough to get the c-clip on the end of the axle to pop free from the trans and out it comes. I'd think some JB would hold enough for that.

Also, not sure how good of luck you'd have drilling into the anyway as it's probably some super hard steel.
