Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley - 11 PSI too...

Just got a aeroforce the other day & hooked her up. I took a quick blast down the highway & to my horror say 5-8 degrees on KR in bank 1. Thankfully I don't pound on my car too often but this has got me worried.

Mods are in sig

Few other things I know:
1) Might have an exhaust leak under the car, felt like some exhaust was coming from underneath the car
2) Front O2 got all effed up during the O2 extension, I got the wires crossed up I guess & got a code (can't remember which one right now) - I cleared the code & have not seen the CEL since but it may be stored?
3) I figured the O2 problem would default the computer to run rich & I have been consuming much more fuel than my last 2 GP's @ 19MPG now, last 2 GP's about 25MPG
4) I think I have an upgraded PCM, my fans stay on about 2 minutes after car shuts off & it appears I can go slightly above redline stringing out a gear (which bothers me & needs to b fixed) - how can I tell what pcm?
5) Looked at LFT's & B2 stayed pegged at 3.1 while B1 fluctuated between 0 & -13 depending on the driving I did (low when off the gas, higher when on the gas a bit cruising kinda, & down low again with a little more brisk acceleration)
6) Blipped the throttle for 3 seconds today may 75% WOT & got 6.0 KR

Where to start here?

Crappy deal, gotta spend another $200+ on a WB or FPG? Would a compression tester work as an alternative? Car will never run anything more than a 3.4 so I would hoping to keep the gauge costs down. Is this really the first place to start?

What are your narrow band readings looking like at WOT?

New to the tuning scene so bear with me, I don't think the AF can read narrow band unless I can deduce that from reading another parameter? I am honestly concerned about doing any more WOT stuff with such high KR.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

Check your trans dipstick and made sure it isn't hitting the headers

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

I believe that the aeroforce has it labeled as the O2 sensor, or something similar to that. Maybe just O2.

I don't usually get too bent out of shape from seeing KR on stock pulley cars. If you have that much knock, it's not usually due to boost, but other issues. Maybe it's false. Maybe your fuel pump isn't keeping up. Either way, you will PROBABLY be ok going WOT for a few seconds just to see what your O2 sensor is saying. If it's any lower than probably 700ish, you've more than likely got fueling issues.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

I think the trans dipstick is close, I didn't have to bend it with the SD's installed - I will tie it back tonight & go for a run to see

I did look at O2 today on the ride to work, was cycling between 50&700ish normal driving, will take a look at lunch at WOT.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

WOT or close to it:

1) O2 reading bank 1 950ish
2) When I had knock of about 6 degrees ignition advance was 12.5 - is that normal? or does that confirm timing is being is being pulled?

Ok...I'm guessing your pump is probably working ok, judging by your O2. That's what I would normally expect.

Having 12.5* of advance with 6* of kr is higher than I would think a stock PCM should be running. Or, is the car tuned?

Or, is the car tuned?

Not 100% sure

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

Pulled codes (although no CEL) PO332 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2).

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

is anyone near with a tuner? what is the history on the car? what mods were on it when you got it? anything in particular seem newly replaced?

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

Yeah, there is definitely a tune on there if your fans are staying on when you shut the car off. Timing sure looks to me like it's turned up beyond stock, from what you are seeing. It may just be too high.

Looks like your rear O2 sensor is causing some issues. Which sucks, because you've pretty much got to pull the trans or motor to get to it. If you have small hands, you might be able to weasel your hand in there to make sure it didn't come unplugged or something.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

Will @ Overkill is not far from me, I swapped the motor in myself but didn't touch the knock sensors which seems to require changing if PO332 is coming up.
GTPpower, changing the O2's is a piece of cake iirc, its changing the knock sensor that may suck camel nuts...

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

Dammit....meant knock sensor. :th_hammerhead2:

Good catch.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley

I keep reading up on PO332 - either wires busted, connections come undone or sensor bad.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley - dreaded P0332 Rear Knock Senso

Either way...you have a ton of fun ahead of you. I'm not jealous, even a little bit.

Re: Loads of KR with headers, rockers & stock pulley - dreaded P0332 Rear Knock Senso

I guess I will try the following steps

  • Verify the resistance of the knock sensor (compare it to factory specs)
  • Inspect for broken/frayed wires leading to the sensor
  • Check the wiring and connections leading to/from the knock sensor and PCM/ECM
  • Verify proper voltage is reaching the knock sensor (e.g. 5 volts)
  • Verify proper grounding of sensor and circuit
  • Replace the knock sensor
  • Replace the PCM/ECM
