Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

Well Brandon put RTV on all the LIM bolts.

But quickly after we tightened the LIM down, we to take it back off as we forgot to put RTV on the corners of the gaskets.

We didn't put new RTV on the LIM bolts afterwards. Just wrenched them back in place.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

brando just got a F on lim jobs from me........rtv on the lim bolts? wtf? forgot to dab rtv on the lim corners? again wtf lol

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

Brandon didnt want to use RTV on the LIM bolts originally.

He wanted to use something else - Thread Sealant maybe? Not sure.

But either way, we didnt have any, so he resorted to RTV on the bolts.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

you should dab first, then install the gaskets, lim and side rubbers, then dab again, set the lim. those 4 corners are the area that has no real gasket there.

and use thread sealant on the lim bolts, not rtv.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

I am so disappointed. I put rtv down before I laid the runners down just forgot it on top, but I went back and put it down. Sooooo shut that down. Annnnnd I thought I had thread sealant but I didn't so I used what I had. He didn't wanna go back to the store. So rtv was the next best thing, just a thin layer to make sure no water would happen.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

its not the water your worried about, its the bolts backing out then you get water and vac leak. also torque the bolts down.

i dont remember exact specs, they are in the general tech section in a sticky i think. i have 3 torque wrenches if you want to borrow one :-p got them free from snap on when i graduated UTI. also have torque angle gauge from snap on.

like i said before, in AllDATA it says to you GM spec thread sealant/loctite on LIM bolts

side question, has anyone gotten their LIM gasket from zzp? mine was really thick aluminum material, not the thin metal material shown in josh's and this thread.

im likely gonna do my gasket again for piece of mind, but when i do, im throwing in LS7 lifters and a new set of rockers, bc mine have 207k miles on them.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

Im pulling it all back apart Thursday.

This time, I'm putting thread sealant on the LIM bolts.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

well we had a in/lb torque wrench but i've never torqued lims and never had a problem. i put the torque wrench on it and it just felt too tight and it never clicked and I felt that I was gonna snap it off so I stopped and went back to the 3 finger top of the ratchet rule.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

thick metal is good. i think the zzp are acdelco, as they look the same. and are about the same price. i got the ac delco set for rockauto.

and a FELPRO upper plenum gasket, aka sc gasket from az for 12 bucks. rock auto was 11 but it would have shipped from another warehouse and shipping killed it.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

I dont have a torque wrench. Ill have to just judge it somehow, unless I go buy one.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

RTV or teflon paste? RTV may be a catch 22. If you break the seals they made, you might cause leaks since RTV doesn't stay workable, it dries. And trying to clean it out of those threads may allow some to fall inside the motor. Those holes go into the oil and coolant passages.

Dan on retightening. Please don't go past 15ft lbs on the LIM bolts and 20 ft lbs on the SC bolts. I've seen guys break or strip them. Those are the two specs that I use when replacing LIM's.

PS.. Nice on the workout.. :th_thumbsup-wink: Didn't have to get all grumpy with me .... I was busting your chops, cause it read like you had found the issue.

Im not getting grumpy with you. I could never do such a thing.

So you are saying, I should remove each LIM bolt, clean off the RTV and apply thread sealant and re-tighten the bolts on the LIM? Now, lets say some did fall inside the motor, is that a bad thing?

Does the blower bolts need thread sealant as well?

And I dont have a torque wrench at the moment. Should I go out an purchase one before re-tightening all the bolts? Or can I judge the tightness of each bolt?

Re: 1997 Black GTP, LIM Has Been Completed.

Well.. if you don't have a torque wrench, I'd suggest getting one. It's a great tool if you plan to work on a car.

You scared me (I know you body build), thought you said you were gonna really torque them down. Might have been a lack of caffination. Reread and I'm confused if Brandon used a three finger rule...and if that's pretty loose.

At this point, I'd suggest pulling the charger. Then check the LIM bolts to be 15ft lbs. Don't pull them or apply anything else. The RTV isn't a big deal, but cleaning it might be a pain. Make sure the gasket surfaces are clean, mainly free of any bumps.

Then once you pretty things up with paint. Torque the SC to 17-20ft lbs and call it good.

I did not tighten any bolt on this car. Brandon used the 3 finger rule on the LIM as we did not use a torque wrench.

So I shouldnt even remove the LIM bolts totally?

Just pull the blower off and snug the LIM bolts down even more.
