fuel tank removal

I have a 2004 Grand Prix with a erratic fuel gauge. I understand the sending unit for the gauge can be repaired upon the removal of the fuel pump.

I know the 2003 and older models have a fuel pump access panel in the truck, so I missed out on convenience by one year.

So what kind of hoops does one have to jump through to remove the fuel tank from a 2004-2008 Grand Prix?
 


might wanna double check if you have the access panel in the trunk bc i have a 2004 and it has the access panel.
 
That would be great if that were the case. I'll have to look in the trunk for the panel.


Has anybody repaired the gauge sender? I see there's a repair kit on Rock Auto for around $20.
 
Lots of people have. I personally haven't but the wife's bonneville needs it done whenever I get around to it.
 


I have a 2001 Pontiac grand Prix gt with the same erratic fuel gauge although neither my husband or i can seem to find the access panel in the trunk.. does anyone have am idea or a photo as to where this is??
 
Look under the carpet it's a piece of metal with like 8 nuts holding it down. It's at the front of the trunk in front of the spare tire. You can't really miss it.
 
Or if you want to get all crafty, cut a hole where the pump is and get it out like the older cars.

Just make a new cover the hole and paint so it can't rust. It would be way quicker and less of a pain to do it this way.

I'd be afraid to cut that close to the tank. Back it up on some ramps and get it done...

anybody got a diy for removing the tank. this fuel issue is getting to be a problem im gunna drop the tank i suppose
