? I don't see the problem, I get into my car through the trunk and hood all the time. The firewall is a tight fit but the seats in the back lay down!

Agreed. I rent and don't have the room for a two post.

I happened to chat with a neighbor that's a retired metalworker. He explained a little about the design, and both us were interested in how the sending unit worked and stayed sealed. They seem worth looking into for a (somewhat) portable option.
