XP Cam Time.....

So im ready to cam my car along with my friend. He is getting a VS cam and i am gonna go with an XP Cam. What are the things and everything i should get for the cam so i can take it to this performance shop and have them put it in? If you guys could list them for me i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Valve springs (probably 105 Crowe Cam)
Valve seals (Fel Pro Vitons)
Reusable rocker bolts (Ensure the shop is told they should be torqued to 25ft lbs)
Modified retainers (you do not need valve locks)
If your car is high mileage, swap the lifters
LIM gaskets (GM or fel pro with part number ending with a T, torque aluminum intake gaskets to 15ft lbs)
SC Gasket (Fel Pro)
Coolant elbows (Dorman 47065)
Throttle Body gasket (and a can of TB cleaner)
Valve cover gaskets if they havent' been done recently (Fel Pro with grommets)
Injector o-rings (fel pro)
Timing cover gasket (fel pro, if your oil pan is leaking, buy the lower conversion set)
Spark plugs in the correct heat range. Say one range cooler
If you are putting on a pulley - make sure they have the right puller...generic pullers do not work out in the end.

They should have RTV, thread sealer with PTFE (lim and timing cover bolts), gasket surface cleaner etc there.

Thank you bill boost.

What about a Rollmaster Timing Set? And could i get and will a cam install kit from zzp include most of what you listed? My engine has about 58-60,000 miles.

Tell your friend to skip the VS... the XP is too mild as it is. The VS cam is almost like not even having an aftermarket cam lol

Cam install kit is what you want...if you keep the idle at 800 or higher, you can run a stock timing chain with a new dampner and the Crow 105's...

People have made great gains with a VS...and it is way better than a stock valvetrain'd car by far.

Okay i will try to talk him into an xp cam. He had a s1x cam before but he blew that engine when for unknown reasons that i know off. Are there any benefits from keeping the idle at 800 or higher? So any lower than 800 i would need a rollmaster timing set?

I said FelPro/GM because I do a lot of installs. As an installer I cringe at the ZZP install kit. First off...their LIM and VC gaskets fit badly. Badly enough I tell the customer that I question the VC's will seal.

Let's look at the most expensive kit... IMO it's missing VC grommets, TB gasket, injector o-rings, and cam lube. Grommets are key to a VC sealing, as is a gasket that fits properly. ZZP's VC gaskets fit their aluminum VC's perfectly...not stock covers. Now you still need springs and retainers, likely you want a fresh chain too.

Kit 4 includes:
  • Timing chain dampener
  • 12 COMP CAMS reuseable rocker bolts
  • supercharger gasket (except L36/22)
  • 2 coolant passage O-rings (except L36/22)
  • GM oem aluminum intake gasket set
  • front cover gasket
  • ARP assembly lube
  • valve cover gaskets
  • crank bolt
  • cam bolt

You asked for further input, when I'm working on my car, the parts I mentioend are the ones I'd use.

By bringing up the idle, you smooth out the cam lope. This keeps the dampener from having to dampen a lot of extra chain movement that occurs with an aftermarket cam.

If your buddy wants a VS, don't talk him out of it.. it's a decent cam. Although I have compared it to doing rockers. ....lol

Lower idle = harsher on the timing chain.

105's are pretty tame, my 90lb. LS6's had 44~k on them with an XP and the idle was set at 725~ RPM and the dampner was gone when we pulled the motor for the big cam build.

Keep it at least at 800+ to keep the chain happy.

Ok cool. I really appreciate all the wonderful and helpful information. Will order everything saturday or by monday. Thanks again guys.

bull****.

if the VS is such a crappy, not worth it cam then why have people made just as much power with it versus an XP? in fact, given the choice between a free XP cam and a $300 VS, i would buy the VS cam because i know it's potential. the XP is not the best cam out there by any means of the definition. it's mediocre at best.
