Wonky Gas Gauge

Hi,

I bought by 04 GP GT2 back in January and im curious if this issue is common on the GP. My gas gauge is all over the place. For example, this morning it read just under 1/4 tank. I drove up a long hill and when I reached the top it was reading well over half. I came back down the hill, by the time I reached the bottom the low fuel warning was on the DIC.

When I park on a level surface after driving I can watch the gauge move between the 1/8th mark and almost up to half. I really dont trust the gauge below 1/4 tank. Winding roads do the same thing. my range display will fluctuate between "LOW MI" and about 130 mi.

Last time it was low enough to keep the low fuel display constantly, I filled it right to the top. It took 15 gallons. Knowing that its a 17 gallon tank, i still had a full two gallons left and the needle was as far down as it could go.

Your fuel sender is probably in need of replacement.

is it really "necessary" to replace the fuel sender? will it harm anything if i just let it be and just keep close track of what i have for gas?

Its "necessary" if you want the gas gauge to work.

Its called a fuel level sensor. The float on the pump in connected to a arm that swings across a thing that almost looks like a circut board, and that sends a signal to the pcm, which then tells the needle for the gas gauge what to read.

The finger that sweep across the board get worn off and cause the faulty readings. The piece with the fingers can be replaced for under 30 bucks, if you do the work yourself, the pump will need to come out to replace it.

Otherwise no, nothing will get hurt if you continue to drive like the way it is, just dont run out of gas is what I say.
