Winter Tire Suggestions on a 2006 Grand Prix GXP?

Hi All,

I'm looking to get winter tires for my 06 Grand Prix GXP. At first glance they seem almost twice as expensive as my 99 GTP (about $900 vs around $400 for the GTP). Also, i want to get 4 low-cost rims for the winter tires. These look to be at least $400. So i'm looking at $1,300 for winter tires and rims. All i've done so far is checked out tires on Tirerack and rims on eBay.

-Anyone have any advice?
-Would other sizes fit and still work correct? (with the speedo).
-Would other places have a better price besides Tirerack? I was looking at Blizzak LM-32

There will only be about 10 occasions where i need to drive on the road in moderate-bad snow (usually on the highway) so studded tires would not be the best option for me (or chains for that matter).
 
Run 245/45/18's on all 4 corners.

Also anything blizzak will cost more for sure. Any winter tire is better than an all season in the cold/snow. General/firestone/nitto all make winter tires aswell and might be cheaper than those bridgestones.
 
I just looked on tirerack and those blizzak are crazy money, over 220 each.

They have some dunlop and yokohama snow tires for like 60 bucks less each, I'd go with them.

****, even the michelin tires are far less than those blizzaks.
 


I own my own tire machines and install/balance/fix them as a hobby. I touch about 25-30 cars a year for snow tire changeovers for friends & family. (Before that I spent about 15 years working at national tire chain stores, so I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable).

I've tried many times to justify a more expensive snow tire (X-Ice, Blizzak, etc.) but I've found that the less expensive snow tires (i.e. General) work equally as well and last just as many seasons. So the moral of the story is any snow tire is much better than any "all season" tire in the winter.

I wish I could recommend something besides "buy the cheapest snow tire" but I have never been able to justify it. And don't get studs.

Blizzaks / pay for the name. Must be a catchy name cause every one suggests it but no one seems to actually own them.
 


I have blizzaks on wife's van. Got all 4 runs tires and sensors for a good good deal. They work great....... I have Yokohama winter something with all the sipping (small thread blocks) and they work the same.

Me too. And I can't help but notice tire tread when I look at any car/truck The amount of people driving around with near-bald tires with winter approaching , makes me be thankful I have a winter car.
What works for those people in dry conditions , will not once snow and ice comes.
Its these idiots / cheap-o's that cause the accidents , Making my work commute horrible - those bastards lol
