Unless your strut towers go, then its not worth the money/effort really.Regardless of the fragility of the transmission, the 3800 is one of the best engines ever designed.
Simple, durable and strong enough to handle some insane amounts of power considering the weight and size as compared to other similar size/displacement engines.
And the W-Body platform is known for being the one with the 3800, and since it came in so many different cars it's even now still cheap and plentiful.
I don't think the W-Body will ever be fully abandoned, because, even with all of it's shortcomings and design flaws/failures, it's a car that refuses to die, and is too cheap to repair to make a different platform feasible for a dependable daily driver.
The W-body is a fantastic platform IF...
1.) You live where they don't salt the roads
2.) You can rebuild/repair a 4t65e
I met both those criteria and still sold the car. Fact is, people are people and sometimes just want something new and different.
It's such a shame that GM put such an amazing engine on top of such a pile of **** transmission.

You. Maybe you stated something earlier in the thread about a performance build and I missed it, because i'm not going to read 6 pages of junk. Just not sure where you got $2600 from. If you would looked at the site first, you would have seen the prices. Correct me if I am wrong.
Oh, when I was looking for a trans for my 97 with core charge it was about $2,600 from them.
http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com/GM_High_Performance_4T65E.html price has come down since then apparently.
I also noticed they have parts for the 4L60E
