Whining while turning

Hey guys, new to forum but have been doing lots of reading/research. I say that but still can't figure out what is wrong with my wife's 07 GT.

When she starts it up everything starts fine but she has to let the car warm up for approximately 5-10 minutes before she can go anywhere. If she gets in to much of a hurry the car makes a whining sound when she turns the wheels. I am thinking power steering pump but am unsure. Also, it does not matter if the ambient temp outside is hot or cold, which is another reason I am thinking power steering due to the fact that the ps fluid must get warmed up during circulation while she is sitting.

She is actually wanting to get rid of the car and I want to keep it. This is the first things that has gone wrong, other than me blowing the front dash speaker, I thought the Monsoon would handle it with the stock radio.

2007 Pontiac GT Supercharged, no mods, completely stock.

Anyways, thanks for any advice.

It is very probable that the power steering fluid is low.

This is awkward to check on these engines, so people often forget to. Nonetheless, any idiot can manage it.

Pop the hood, lean over the passenger side fender. Next to the strut tower, you will see a cap under some hoses right up against the firewall. Pop that off to check the level on its attached dipstick.

If it's low, it's a $6 fix. Buy a bottle of power steering fluid from any parts store with a long skinny funnel, add a little at a time and check.

Sometimes, this could be caused by air settling out from the factory fill. If you encounter low fluid again, it means you have a leak - that stuff does not just evaporate.

I ran into the same problem kept checking the fluid and was having to fill it daily often ended up needing a new rack and pinion not cheap so try to keep on top of this while its still early on

Thanks for the thoughts. I am not sure why I missed the power steering reservoir, other than it is hidden very well. I checked it last night while I did the oil, filter and air filter. The Power Steering was very low so I topped it off. Took it out for a spin and all is well. She is happy again, which makes my life a lot better. :th_winking:
