Whining sound power steering ?

I have had a low whining sound that increases with rpm. It sounds like the power steering but I am not sure. I just replaced the steering pump and the sound is still there. I hear it at idle when reving . and at low speeds. Is this a common sound for Gm power steering.

I hear it at idle when reving.

:th_scratchhead: That's talent right there!

Your description is a little confusing. Can you hear it at idle or while you are revving? If at idle, it's most likely your P/S. If while revving it could be your P/S or your S/C.

It is noticable at idle when you rev engine or turn the steering back and fourth. Its the same sound I had before I changed the pump. I bought a napa pump. Rebuilt. I can hear my supercharger whine completly different sound.

power steering....well the lines need to be bled.
get both front wheels off the ground, make sure the resivour is full, and with the engine not running, turn the wheels lock to lock and back 15 times all the air should be gone if not repeat.

It is possible that you got a bad rebuilt pump. I would take it to them so they can hear it and demand a new one.

Indeed and JC I wasnt insulting your intelligence, some ppl, including myself can look over the simplest things lol.

Yeah i'd just bring it back. They shouldnt have a problem returning it no questions asked becuase most everything you buy for you're car from an auto parts store has a lifetime waranty on it. Wich is nice.

What about the belt tensioner... Could the pully have a bad bearing..... Also Could be your alternator's bearings going out. Try getting a Mechanics stethoscope and have someone rev the engine to help pin point the location. Im having the same whine on my car and I already replaced the alternator, and now think its the tensioner pully bearing.

actually, its better to keep the car on the ground and turn the steering wheel almost at lock to lock. ( meaning right before it locks throw the steering wheel the other way and repeat process until the noise is gone) you can do bad things to a pump by hitting the locks. also have the cap removed when bleeding almost as a vent. the car needs to be running to bleed the system. turn the car off and re-check. if you add to little you'll be sucking air all over so over fill it slightly but not to the point where its dumping out. watch for bubbles. bubbles indicate air

Thanks I have done all these things. I am now told by a parts tech that I have air in system. He wants me to pull a vaccum on the resevoir and turn the wheel while running.
