Whine on a cold start

Well winter is here and here in Michigan it was super cold this morning. I ran into this problem last year but it's just been kinda annoying. Every time it gets really cold like below 30ish and I start it up it whines like crazy. And it whines until it's warm. What could this be... It kinda sounds like the noise the power steering pump makes but it doesn't make sense because it whines when I start it. I can upload a video if you guys are confused

Your NA car is just too fast for the cold.

But seriously, mine does this too, but only for a couple seconds. I assume it is the power steering pump.

Yea I went to go warm up my car before school and it was still whining when i came out about five minutes later but not nearly as bad

I have an N/A as well, i live in north dakota so im no stranger to the cold, and it wines when cold started as well. could be PS pump but these cars can be whiners about the cold lol

To me it sounds like the pump in the trans not the ps pump. But it noise changes as you turn the steering wheel so it must be the ps pump.

If it is cold out and it whines turn the wheel lock to lock a couple times if it gets louder it is the PS pump. Check your fluid.

In my old GP, I ran only some off brand of power steering stop leak/stop squeal fluid in for the PS fluid and it never whined again.

^that or run synthetic atf in the p/s system. Only downside to that is if your rack leaks, synthetic would leak faster.

Mine would leak faster than I could put it in, Lucas is the only thing keeping my rack sealed lol. Or I would put it in and that should help with the cold start whining.

Yea tomorrow I will turn the wheel and see if I can hear anything different... And probably check the fluid, I haven't in a while

I flushed my fluid with regular valvoline power steering fluid last year. Its clear and clean but had no effect on the whine. So I guess just new conventional fluid doesn't make a difference.
