Which oil do you use?

Didn't see a thread like this thought i'd ask the age old question which oil do you use/prefer?

I have been using mobil 1 0w20 full synthetic for the past year. Biggest difference i've noticed is on cold starts. Haven't had to use my block heater all winter.

www.bobtheoilguy.com

this website contains all if not too much info on oil for anything.

Ya, I go on BITOG and look around often. It has some good info, and some not so good.

The 3800 engine is very tolerant to different oil brands and viscosities, like you mentioned it has been discussed many times. And pretty much any oil changed regularly is just fine. My current oil choice is the least expensive conventional 5W-30 oil with moly changed out every 5k.:th_thumbsup-wink:

I use German Castrol 0W30, otherwise known as Castrol Syntec 0W30 European Formula. It's the only true full synthetic Castrol offers (last I checked was over a year ago, so this could be different).

I change it every 7000 miles with an oil filter changed out and re-primed half way through.

Cold starts gives me about 80-84 psi, hot idle (over 180 degrees) gives me about 52-60 psi depending on how hot the oil actually is. Hot cruizing on the freeway I have a steady 70-75 psi at about 60 MPH.

Someone be a champ and run mobil 1 5W-20 or 0W-20.

After I'm all out of mobil 1 5W-30 I'm going to try 0W-20 or 0W-40.

Royal purple 10w-30. Im going to try 5w-30 next oil change to see if I get any positive benifits.

Im aware that its thinner at startup/cold, but in my blazer I had noticed had worse mileage with 10w-30 then 5w-30. So my broscience says I could get better mileage with a thinner oil while not going too thin. Worst comes to worst I gain nothing and its the same with no extra cost to me.

I would do that, but i've heard some people have had more valvetrain noise with thinner oils like that. Also most wear from what im aware of occurs at startup and I dont want to go too thin for that reason. Again I base this on some fact with a mix of broscience.

The OP has been the champ and is running 0W-20....

The reason you have wear is because the oil isnt thin enough.

Couch, what sort of oil pressure are you seeing?

Edit:

Signature Series 100% Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil (AZO)
Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 10.5
Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 59.0

Signature Series 100% Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil (ASL)
Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 10.5
Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 60.3

Doesn't seem much different.

But i'm new to oil.
