Which Double Roller Timing Chain To Get

Like the title says which double roller timing chain should I go with. Heard they should be changed every 10,000 miles with the xpz cam. Unsure of mileage on the one in my car so I'd rather throw a hundred or so bucks at it rather than trashing the engine.

Also open to other options too that's just what I found. I'd rather buy better if it'll last a lot longer I'm willing to pay more but if I gotta change it every 10,000 anyways then I'll go with the cheapest good option.
 


There was an issue with the jp roller chains breaking years ago. I believe now rollmaster bought out jp and they are the same chain. Either way, I wouldn't risk it. I would just buy the rollmaster.

Also, 10k is nothing if it was installed properly. I've got a xpz car out there with about 70k on the chain with no issues.
 
Thanks for the info. I just ordered the rollmaster with the double thick cover gasket from ZZP. Good to know they can last quite a while then. It had me pretty worried that it was gonna skip a tooth or fall off any day with the mileage being unknown on it.
 
Make sure you correct the chamfer if needed.

What issues to they have with the chamfer? I've not done a timing chain on a 3800 before so I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Only timing chains I've actually done are on small block mopars and it's just an unbolt set timing and bolt back on with those. Every other car I've had apart that far has been a timing belt.
 
the crank gear needs to be milled to match the stock one or it will rub the timing cover. iirc zzp recommends using two gaskets? or some people do that. cant recall.

If you measure how far away from the engine block face to the timing chain gear teeth are, you'll notice the double roller is different. Examining the stock and double roller sprockets you'll see a different campher. The double roller can be machined to match the stock, you'll need to bring it to a machine shop. If done this way the sprocket will sit the same as the stock one. To help, the oil pump cover is against that is machined, providing additional clearance inside the timing chain cover as the OP cover is at the same spot as the double roller gear sprocket. As noted, some add double gaskets to increase the distance too. Use the search or Google as it is a well documented issue. Is less painful to just get the double roller with the corrected gear AND the machined OP cover. Done! Note too, some gaskets are paper and thicker, some newer ones are really thin. I think one of the 3800 vendors used to sell a thicker gasket?
 
I've got the chamfer corrected, oil pump cover clearances, and I still ran the zzp thick gasket. I have quite a bit of room there.
 
The main issue was that the double chain was made for an Aussie version of the 3800 in the Holden and it has a different crank.
 
they don't all need to be chamfered. I bought one new several years ago, and sent it to a machinist who measured a stock unit and found the double roller unit to be close enough not to worry about.
