Which alternator do you have?

So there are 2 different alternators I see for 04+ cars. One is the standard old alternator with a nut in the center of the pulley and the other is the "clutched" alternator it has a cover over the center of the pulley. I have noticed that looking at different websites that 04' always shows a clutched alternator and 05' always shows a standard alternator. 06' and later seem to waffle on wether or not it's equipped with an overrunning clutch or a standard fixed pulley system. So which do you have? Have you replaced, or has it been replaced in the past. I'm not asking because I want to know which is better, pros and cons or anything else. All I'm trying to figure out is what year is equipped with what.

Thanks,

Jeff

my 04 compG and my 04 gtp clone both had the clutch. one dieded via a screeching sound from the clutch slipping, the other had a wavering screech/clack as it released/locked

both are gone, replaced with vintage horizontal bolt brackets and horizontal bolt cs 144 alternators

Old style.. Which was rebuilt and powder coated (04)

But then I eventually had problems with it and Matt (Booba) convinced me to go the CS 144 route

It's starting to look like all the 04's come with the clutched alternators. Anyone have an 06+ with one or came with one?

Jeff

Gm figured out that the clutches weren't worth the NVH complaints.
And much like the 04/05 only LCA'S/sway bar links....gm went back to a proven design

Not sure what was in there (was OEM, sold it to the scrap yard last year) before I swapped out for https://www.dcpowerinc.com/fit/Pontiac~Grand-Prix~2004~3.8L-V6/8293-250-xp.html

Scored it used on Ebay 5 or so years ago. I bought it for my audio system in my 2005 GP. My 230XP must be a discontinued model..I don't see it listed on their website anymore, at least for the GP anyway.
You can see the custom wiring I did to accommodate the extra juice. It is welding cable. Hammered, punched and soldered the copper lugs on and put some heat shrink on the ends. I still need to taper the ends to the starter as it is crowded down there with the bigger lugs.

That's cool I am really not concerned with aftermarket or custom alternators I am trying to figure out when the clutched alternator was used. Looks like 04' is the only one, although I spoke with someone that had an 06 with one.

Thanks

Jeff
