When NOT to honk (airbag injury pics)

Thanx for the input on my other thread, Blue. I reckon this is the end of my rant. Last therapy session was this morning and I should be cleared to return to work in a couple days. Whew. Permanently lost 10 degrees of down travel in my wrist but pain should be manageable from here on out if I don't overdo it. Just hoping to keep the job and not get a pay cut.

To summarize- airbags are "meadow muffins". Cow pies. Never again will I drive in front of a live one if I can help it. I'm not the only one. My tax lady's Mom fell asleep at the wheel and a seatbelt would have been plenty for the ride she took. Being a tiny older lady, she suffered eight busted ribs and a broken nose. We can all do without that. Its stupid.

If you must be in a car with supplemental inflatable restraints... PAY ATTENTION to that first rule on the airbag warning label on your visor. Sit as far away from the airbag as possible. Smaller individuals sitting closer to the wheel face a bigger cannon, in effect. Food for thought. Peaceful safe driving to all!

No problem, I really like the one I got. It's actually a little more than whats needed for someone that just wants it in case of an accident.

I'll stick with airbags, I sit as far back as the seat will allow me, so at least that helps. At work I get in so many cars that have the seat so close, I cannot physically operate the car without moving it back because my knees are in my chest. I think about airbags when I see that.

The horn location is what would scare me. Few cars' horn buttons aren't over the airbag... The location of the horn button was placed there before airbags existed, with the addition of such a powerful explosive, you think they'd have to relocate it?

That sure would make a lot of sense. Maybe relocate it near the shifter? What function does the horn serve on a modern automobile anyhow? Its only there to express road rage and not safe to use to alert traffic ahead of you because the button is the bomb.

It was probably one of those designer practical jokes, imagine the conversation... "Hey lets make it where the horn button blows up in their face and see if they buy it. I mean doing something besides that is gonna suck, this is easier and its quittin time. Send in the idea and see if they bite....."

This is acceptable right?

And I use my horn once in a great while when someone is texting at a light. I suppose if I didn't have a horn I could drop it in neutral and hit the rev limiter for a second, it's more than half as loud as my horn with the gutted airbox.

THAT looks a helluvalot more intelligent! Glory be. Boy I don't look at newer junk much these days... I reckon a 97-03 GP lovin' man could re-wire so that the defunct radio buttons work the horn instead. That might actually be a wise and popular mod if indeed its legal. So many of us don't use the steering wheel buttons anymore, and its easy to put a horn sticker over the big buttons then remember its there instead. Hmmm... more food for thought.

The exhaust horns on the grape colored car probably actually do turn more heads than a horn beep. I will say this for the FWD GPs though, the horn is fairly hetero-sounding compared to other makes. Ha.

Yeah loud exhaust is louder than most horns out there lol. I can agree the horns on these are pretty nice, loud enough and not stupid or whiny sounding like some foreign cars. Can't stand those, well if I owned one which I wouldn't.

As the bikers say, loud pipes do save lives. This junk drivin man enjoys glasspacks immeasurably! Glorious gratuitous glasspacks for you, click below. Its me crackin up my bro at a 70 punch with ol Nell a few years back... good times with the stock Rocket 350. Its a mood-improver.

Damn sorry that happened! To be honest I use my horn all of the time. I'm an aggressive driver and get agitated easily. Normally it's used when someone cuts in front me, someone sits at green light not paying attention, and when people just are being stupid. Like today, I'm coming home and turning left in a fairly bust intersection. There was another car in front of me and light was solid green with no arrow so we had to wait. Well light changes to yellow, cars in opposite direction stop, and the retard in front of me is still not going. Note that I'm fully passed the white line basically in the intersection. Light turns red and the dumb idiot finally goes after the other light changes green leaving me sitting literally in the middle of the intersection. Was only able to back up a little cause cars were behind me. God I was mad. I guess I could've blew through the red light cause technically I was in the intersection before it turned yellow, but still. People are sooooo dumb. Finally when I got a green arrow, I hammered it and got up to 50mph in the city lol (2x the speed limit). I just don't understand how people don't know how to drive. Not saying you don't, but the person who cut you off deserves more than paying for repairs. I'll admit I've been the dumb driver, but I learned from those mistakes and never do them again. My dad's a sheriff and always drives aggressively so you can see where I get my habits from. Again sorry that happened to you. I hope you get better soon! I didn't read everyones posts so this might have been mentioned but, are you gonna get your GTP fixed or scrapped?

I've been fixing it little by little. The arm feels better so my routine is about to resume. Plenty of work and parts are still needed but I am driving it daily.

That's good! Was anything major broke? Based on the pictures it looked like the front end needed work, but no bent frame or anything, right? And how does one go about fixing deployed airbags? Do you have to get a whole new airbag module and a whole new dashboard? Never had this happen so I don't know what all gets done.

Matts way: You get new parts, put them in and don't hook up the airbags at all
The "proper" way": YOu put in the new parts and use a Tech II to reset the system.

Gotcha. I wear glasses sometimes and I want to train myself to throw them off my face if I have time before a crash cause that will probably shove glass right in my eye. That's the only really negative thing, to me, to deactivate my airbags.

Nope theres no time for any of that. Simply pull the fuse to disarm. Replacing all the affected parts is the fix, after which the system checks itself when powered up. The light should go off by itself if all the repairs are good. I don't want airbags anymore ever but you can't get full ins coverage unless the system is functional. I need to go back to older cars! But yeah I pretty much just slapped the bumper back on the GTP and got a new windshield. Drives fine, W-body front structure is pretty tough.
