wheel bearings again... and the ABS light

About 18 months ago I had the driver-side wheel bearing and outer tie rod ends replaced (it was making a grinding/rattling noise when turning (also power-steering fluid was low (took care of that)). Six months later i notice the same thing from the passenger-side wheel (grinding/rattling noise when turning), so replaced that wheel bearing too. All this was per the shop's recommendation.

A year later I am hearing/feeling the same rattling from the drivers side wheel. Is there some underlying issue that could cause these to be wearing out too fast? I don't want to spend another couple hundred dollars only to find out I'm going to have do keep doing this every 6-12 months for as long as I own the car or spend several hundred for a couple years only to find they there was some other thing that keeps causing it.

The other thing, the other day the brakes/ABS seemed to fail, pulled over and the front brakes were pretty hot (for only having driving a couple blocks, no hills, etc.). The brakes have been replaced in the past year, and I looked, they're fine. The ABS light came on (ABS off) and the problem went away. When I took the wheels off the routers could definitely move around a bit (but not nearly as much as when I replaced the bearings before). Drove the car again that night, the ABS light remained on. But after that, no braking issues, no ABS light, just the rattling from the driver's-side wheel.

I keep hearing from everyone (reasonably well-informed): "there's no way those issues are related" "there's no way you should have to replace your wheel bearing again 18 months later!"

Are these issues related (other posts seem to suggest this)? Potential underlying causes? Any ideas at all?

It's a 99 GT with 143k miles, time to give it up? :th_crying1:

Maybe they were replaced with cheap bearings?

Timkin make very good bearings and or anything with a warranty.

Your ABS issue is prolly a wire issue if it goes away and comes on as it pleases. Its bet to figure out which wheel, then trace the wires back and looks for broken sections and repair them.

what brand bearing did you use? cheap ones are just that, cheap.

the brake rotor being loose when the tire is off is normal, the wheel holds it tight to the hub.

for the abs light, you can unplug them, and dab some di electrical grease on the plug ends and re install them. check the hardness for damage as well.

grease all 4 hub plugs.

if that dont fix it you can get it scanned to see exactly whats wrong. you need to go to a shop that has a scanner for abs.
