a few questions, im developing an oil leak where theres a small puddle resting in the lower motor mount. i believe its coming from behind the crank pulley when i had to take it out to replace my CPS sensor. i think the gasket/seal thats wrapped around the crankshaft is broken and causing my oil leak.

what's that gasket/seal called? heres a pic for more clarification:

is it called the front main seal as found from zzp's website?

lastly how hard is it to replace the gasket/seal? do i need to take the front cover gasket off or just pull the gasket/seal out and swap in the new one(whatever its called)?

thanks in advance!!! i want this leak gone:th_thumbsup-wink::)

Sadly...yes...you will have to yank the front cover off. Good thing is since your Turbo you don't have to deal with pulling off all the blower accessories. It should just be called the front main seal. You will need to basically tear the old one out...and just place the new one in.

is the front main seal has a spring like ring around the inner circle? i bought a front cover gasket from felpro and have something round but its not like whats on zzp's site(the outer ring isnt green).

Be careful removing it not to scratch the surface of the Journal,or it will leak. Also you want to tap the new one on evenly with a large socket. There a royal PITA.

You can remove the seal and install the new on with the front cover still on the car, I have. I prefer not to do it that way though, because I like to see and feel all the way around the seal as its removed and installed as to not damage anything taking it out, or putting it in.

I would remove the cover, and do it on the work bench.

Getting it out is easy, and like said, don't scratch, or gouge the aluminum of the front cover.

When you install it, it goes in DRY, do not put any lube on it. The green color is the seal already installed, or a color/coating similar.

Press it in evenly, and smoothly. Avoid hitting/pressing hard as the front cover is made of very weak pop tin aluminum, and will crack, and fracture easy if you strike it too hard.

There is a GM J-tool that you use to install it with the cover on the engine, as it threads into the end of the crank, and you turn a big wing nut, and it pulls the seal on into the front cover easy as pie. I have always used one of my brothers super large sockets. Hes a diesel mechanic, so hes got some big ones. :th_thumbsup-wink:

Hope that helps.

PRJ changed my front seal in a matter of about 15 minutes. The mans also a beast though.
