ok iknow this is grand prix forums but ive got a 99 montana 3.4 and i thought the power steering was going out,well the power steering pump is were the belt is and this noise is coming from the area around the throttle body and it sounds very similar to the bad power steering pump noise and it only does it when it the vans temp opens up and everything gets hot and down the road but does nothing when first cranked and drove,so what could it be???
 


From where you said the sound is coming from its most likely the trans pump, your trans filter might be plugged so buy a new filter and ~8 quarts of trans fluid and do a pan drop and replace the filter and fluid if the sound goes away then problem fixed.
 
just FYI your car/van does not have the 3.4DOHC it has a 3400 ohv. these are very different engines. your engine is more related to the 3100.
