What is the point of changing the T-stat to a 180 degree . Besides it opening sooner does it really help, what are the gains. I have a 2007 GXP and just gettin started with what to do or not do with this motor.
 


there is no point for any car run on the street. lower operating temperatures do promote cooler running, helping keep detonation at bay (key word: helping). however, lower operating temperatures increase engine wear and reduces gas mileage.

keep the stock thermostat unless youre having problems with overheating and the system is not compromised in any way.
 
Unless you have a tune also...for lower temp. fan kick on points...it is also only going to help you at highway speeds...as the car is still going to get just as hot driving around town.
 
Street engines were designed to be ran at the operating temperatures of the stock thermostat. NASCAR teams use a 200* degree t-stat.
Its been dyno proven that using the stock tstat produces more power because the engine components clearance tolerances were designed to operate under the temperatures of the stock t-stat. So in the stock t-stat temp ranges allows for the least amount of friction.

The lower temperature thermostats came about when the first computer controlled cars were around, and nobody knew how to tune them. Since with the timing table in the computer controller cars had higher spark advance (timing) at lower ects (Engine Coolant Temperatures) from the factory, installing a 180* t-stat actually gave you more power because of how the timing tables were designed. The idea has just carried over from those days.

Fantastic replay. But I put the 180 in and I still teeter totter around 180 or so as I sometimes have to let a ricer or two know whats up. I read that 160 will throw a code unless you're tuned. So with given knowledge I am still satisfied with the 180. The cartuning turbo gives you a 160 so its gotta have some good since those canandians know their **** when they arent watching/playing hockey lol j/k.
