Alright I don't know where to go next ... planning on a shift kit, maybe a ported TB? and then it's either ER rockers or GT1 CAM anybody have any advice?
 


Cam...and get a ported throttle body from Brian (reptile)...but keep in mind you'll need a tune with the new throttle body.
 
throttle body is going to be a big waste for you. big.

if you want to make power, get a cam. if you want to have a quick car, get rockers.

shift kit if you want your transmission to last a shorter amount of time. i dont trust them. the best thing for a transmission is a tune.
 
haha okay so is ported TB a yes or a no?

Whats the difference in HP gains? I was leaning more towards the ER rockers because they seem much easier for me to install

also, from most places I've heard that the shift kit would increase my transmission life?
 
the rockers or cam will be the biggest seat of the pants, but it will also be the most expensive. the throttle body will be like throwing $200 in the wind (might net you a whole 2-5hp).

the shift kit: the quicker more precise shifting will make soft, wearable parts last longer, but the hard parts that have to take those hard shifts in stride will suffer. its a trade off. the best thing for a transmission is a good tune.
 
ok so im thinking the ER rockers, and getting my TB ported by reptile is only 60 shipped so I think that might be worth it, and a ported rear manifold for 40? (<== is that worth it?) and shift kit on a 102,000 mile tranny, which will die first the hard parts due to the shift kit? or the soft parts without it? lol
 


Get a TransGo Shift Kit from Dave...do a pan drop get a new filter and Dexron VI fluid.

The ported TB is worth it though...the throttle response is what it is for...not really HP gains. If you are gonna buy a ported rear manifold...just go get a dremel and DIY it...as buying one is pointless. The rear manifold is actually casted nicely from the factory for the most part.

Still keep in mind...with rockers and a ported TB...your going to need a tune.
 
Is it really safe to be running rockers with lift ratios as high as 1.9 on a stock cam? Consider for an LS series engine 1.85 is considered high.
 
The reason people run 1.9 rockers is because they dont want to install a cam...then they end up selling their rockers and buying a cam because they got waxed by a cammed car...and yes...it is safe. IIRC they just came out with 1.95:1 RR's.
 
if i were to go with rockers again id get the 1.95RRs, but i wouldnt go with rockers again if i were to build another 3800.

Thanks. What I found via google was: practical limit with just changing the valve lift seems to be 0.5" and the 1.9 ratio rockers put you at .49" lift with the stock cam meaning it'd be fine. More stressful, but no further upgrades required if keeping stock shift points.

Kinda hi-jacking the thread with this question: FWI, 180 T-stat installed, which of the following are worth while for a mild build just looking for a little more: (cam is too far, as is top swap unless I can get an HD tranny on the cheap)

HV3 insert
Port&polish lower intake manifold
PLOG
2.5" cat'd DP
Perhaps the ER ZZP rockers.

Overkill or intense tune will be done once I've decided where to stop.:th_thumbsup-wink:

Edit:Thinking all F) all of the above, but any advice from some of the more experienced people would be appreciated.

Edit 2: $500 for ER rockers and HV3 insert versus $500 for L67 longblock with low miles...

a) you dont need an HD trans to take the power of an m90 setup, my car was proof.

b) porting the LIM is a giant waste of time. leave it alone.

c) get a 3" downpipe. 2.5" is NOT a good choice regardless of you having an N/A car or not.

d) get everything you listed except change what i have already said.

Now its time to decide if top swap is worth it seeing how cheap the parts can be had for.

More direct question, a PLOG should be sufficient for a top swap with no plans to move to a smaller pulley correct?
 
yeah, a plog should be fine if youre just going to top swap it with the stock pulley, but knowing how modding works youre not going to do that. no one ever stops at the stock pulley and you wont either. if you top swap, just get headers right away, youll need them.
