Before I get started, this is something that has been eating at me for a while. It is nothing to start an argument, but if it starts to get out of hand, I hope the admins will go ahead and lock it up or delete for that matter. I know everyone is going to have their own opinions on this. I just hope we can all be adults about it.
What is rice?
Definition- ricer
(Ricer: from the latin word Ricarius meaning to suck at everything you attempt)
A person who makes unnecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster. The most common modifications are (but not limited to):
- Huge exhaust that serves no purpose but to make the car louder
- Large spoiler on the back
- Lots of after-market company stickers they don't have parts from, but must be cool
- Expensive rims that usually cost more than the car itself
- Body kit to make the car appear lower, usually accented with chicken wire
- Clear tail lights and corner signals
- A "performance intake"- a tube that feeds cold air to their engine usually located in areas of excessive heat (behind or on top of the engine)
- Most of these riced cars (a.k.a. rice rockets or rice burners) are imports; Honda Civics, Accords, Integras, CRXs, RSXs, Del Sols Mitsubishi Eclipses, Lancers, Subaru Imprezas, however there are some domestics such as Chevrolet Caviliers, Dodge Neons, Ford Focus; small, slow, economy cars designed specifically to go slow. Please note that some Supras, Skylines, WRX's and other higher performance imports are designed to go fast, and are therfore not always considered rice. It really depends on the severity of the case.
The "ricer" attempts to make their car "performance" by adding the modifications listed above. These ricers are not confined to any one ethnic group or color, however different ethnic groups are known for certain styles.
Now on to how I feel about this. I have been called a ricer on many occasions. Which if you look around, there are more than you know.
So basically a ricer is someone with bolt- ons and other modifications to their car that does not help in performance in any way.
I see quite a few GP's with larger than stock rear wings that help in no way for performance. Why does that make mine rice? Just because it is not the same as everybody else. I don't think so.
There are a few with the SD front air dam. How does this help performance. I opted to buy a whole front fascia that is actually a few pounds lighter than the OEM fascia. Guess what, that makes my car a few pounds lighter. The front air dam makes yours a few heavier. Mine isn't useless like the air dam.
Looks like the ricer population is starting to grow.
A non- functional ram air hood. A useless bolt on. What's the purpose of a ram air hood if it's not set up for it?
Painted brake calipers. Yeah, they look good, but they don't help you stop any faster. Useless.
I don't think I need to go any further on pointing out things that people do that make their cars look good, but is useless and can call someone else rice.
My definition of rice is someone that bashes other people for their hard work because they don't like their style. Someone that tries to race anything with a motor. Thinks they have the best car out there when they shouldn't even be opening their own mouth. I don't feel I fall into any of this. I am the one of the nicest people you could meet and do my best to get along with everyone and help with whatever I can. If you all would like me to be a ricer, there are quite of few Gp's on here that I could have a few choice words for, but choose not to because I know it is being built the way the owner wants it. But I can. I could care less if I get banned from it. Yes it would suck to get banned from such a wonderful community with some awesome people, but you know, s##t happens.
I am sure there will be plenty that will have plenty to say on this and tell me how wrong I am, but the way I see it, if you put it on you car and it doesn't help, that puts you into the rice category also. So before you go and start bashing on someone, you might want to look in the driveway and just see what useless stuff you have done to yours. I could keep going on with this, but I feel I said what I needed to say. I am sure there will be commits on this from ones that don't even read more than a few sentences.
