What causes the LIM to go?

Sorry if it's just as simple as sub par materials from the factory, I haven't found the answer in my searching though. Mine are leaking and I have the gaskets on order (felpro) but I don't want to have to do them twice. What causes them to let go?

In the early to mid 90's all the car manufacturers started a love of aluminum. They found that steel heads, aluminum intakes would have a dissimilar metal issue as well as other BS. They looked at Nylon 66 as their gasket answer. And in a few years..they all realized there were issues with heat/contraction of said material. Now there is an aluminum frame gasket out to replace the plastic ones. Make sure your part number has a T on the end or you are about to put the same crap back in.

Another area of leakage on the LIM is the bolts. Clean them, apply some teflon paste sealer to them and torque appropriately (metal gaskets I suggest 15ft lbs on lim bolts)
 
Great info, thanks! I did get the good gaskets (by following info from here), and I really appreciate the tech on the LIM bolts!
 
Thanks to this forum I've got it all back together and it runs ok. One problem and question. The small, two prong sensor behind the engine, one yellow wire one purple wire going in to it, where does it go? It has a blue "gasket" and goes way down low somewhere. Any help?

No bother. It's just a connection for emissions on a California car. It's probably THE number 1 question asked on the forum. It was my very first question as well. Just leave it hanging there. :th_thumbsup-wink:
 


Actually, I asked because during the test drive I had no speedo and the engine didn't know what rpm to be at. It would bog to 500 and rev to 1500 while under no load and the car was moving. I believe it to be some sort of speedo sensor. I finally found the place it plugs in to, waaaaay down behind the motor.
 
I was attempting to get the wiring harness completely out of the way. Of course I gave up when I looked at what it took to unplug the rear oxygen sensor. I'm sure you know, but I ended up leaving the harness on top of the upper intake and kind of sliding it out from underneath it. This forum has been great.
