What a night

Took the gp out tonight to do some more tuning and see if the trans was still shifting better. It seemed to be running pretty good in the beginning of the night but it seemed as the night went on this got worse. The car started shifting horribly and sometimes not shifting at WOT or close to it. Then the O2's started locking in at 20, yes 20 during pe. The car also just started to have less and less power. But it was running great during normal driving. Since I was getting frustrated I parked it and cruised with a friend for a while. Later on I started the drive home. Once I was on interstate I decided to do some WOT scanning and log it for trouble shooting purposes. I did one run and it seemed to run pretty good and shift good, I was wondering what the hell. So I decided to do another run and the car just rev'd and didn't seem to pull good. I was doing about 80-90 mph and the car just flat out died out on me. The engine shut off and the lights, everything was dead. So there I was doing 70mph or so down interstate with no lights with very little moon light. I managed to see the solid white line on the side of the road enough to get the car pulled over and stopped. I got out and popped the hood and it smelled like burnt wires. I started wiggling wires everything seemed to be ok. I then went to pull the plastic cap off of the positive battery terminal and it arced. So I thought maybe the terminal corroded off. So I called my buddy Travis (kamper98) and let him know what happened. So he went and got is pickup and threw a batter in with tools and a tow rope. Once he got there I tried to take the positive terminal off and it didn't come off. It fell out of the terminal. After looking at it I realized that the terminal its self had melted and the lead all ran out. So Travis just gave me a tow home, probably 5 miles.

Anyways I hope nothing major happened and I hope this was the reason for the car acting stupid all night. Also I would have thought the car should have ran off of the alt. Anyone have an idea why it didn't? Also wanted to say thanks to Travis for helping me out. Called him at 11 and woke him up, and he has to get up at 6am for work. Probably didn't get him until 1:30, I guess I owe him now.

Sorry for the long read.

this is just a wild guess on the battery terminal, maybe when you were driving real fast some how the positive terminal got in contact with some metal part under the hood? how old is the battery? maybe it's low on distilled water and burn out the cell inside the battery? that's my guess i don't i know, but i know you owe your buddy a steak dinner and six pack:th_biggrin2:

the car should run off the battery, if the Alternator is powerful enough to do so. When you have one HECK of a draw......pretty much a dead short to ground, it also relies on the battery. my guess is.... you had one HECK of a short.

check the fusible links on the positive lines. if they look ok, you didnt have a very big short. I had ran across one in my S10 a week ago.

possibilty the Alternator took a dump and you were just running off the battery. but then again the battery light would come on the second the regulator in the alternator stops charging.

I dont know!!!!! that soundd like a horible night

check your starter wires thats wat happen to my gp the terminal on the starter broke off arced on the trans an melted my side post an terminal

Not sure on the age of the battery, there is 12.81 volts in the battery, but I have never load checked it. It shouldn't have hit anything metal because the battery is bolted down and there is nothing metal in that area. My crossbraces aren't installed btw.

Also I did check my main battery fuses and they were good. So I don't know what happened. The battery light could have come on and I wouldn't have known because I had my eyes glued to the kr gauge on my pt. I think I will get a new positive terminal and a new battery and see what happens.

Well I got running again, better than new this time ;). Hope the tranny shifts good, I am just going out to test it out. What happened is the positive battery cable was touching the from plog and it melted the wire and then I had a dead short to ground.

Well Travis and I went out for a night of tuning and wow the car runs like it should now. Pulls 10x harder than it did lastnight. I even managed to beat up on a WRX that said he was running 14psi. Not sure how fast of a car that would be but it made me feel good since we went from a stop. I am just happy the car is running like it should now.

so i was kinda close about the positive terminal touching some metal part. maybe you should buy me a six pack, lol. :)
