Weird Trans after oil change

Le Patriote

New member
2008 Base Grand Prix. 84000 miles. Trans was good, fluid too before oil change. My trans cooler line was leaking, so i decide to do a drop pan a the same time. Putted Dexron 6 , not synthetic. The only problem i see, i putted like 1/4'' too much fluid.

Symptom; Trans slip just a bit in first. Maybe it's because i have too much fluid? Or the trans is bad? If the trans is bad, it will be the 4'th trans on 4 w-body i owned and it will be my LAST GM EVER.

Thank you guy's.

Level is good now. Disconnect for 24h te battery, still slipping and knocking. In first, only when i stop completely at least 2 seconds.

My next car gonna be japanese and manual.

Did you replace the filter when you changed your tranny fluid? And just fyi Dex 6 is synthetic.
All cars have problems, just look it up. Asian cars are not immune to issues either.

Yes. Putted a Intense racing filter, without the shift kit. Dexron 6 in the pan too.

I understand what you said, but;

1. Grand Prix GT 00. Trans slipping ALOT. Black trans fluid. Swapped for another trans and sold the car.
2. Grand Prix GTX 2001. 6 months after, reverse make a grinding noise and vibrate in the car when load on. Still have the car, nothing done yet.
3. Oldsmobile Intrigue GLS 2001 Precision Sport package. Loved this car than,Hard shift problem about the f***** selenoid. Sold at 80k .
4. Pontiac Grand Prix 08. Now this problem.

That's enough for me. 4 in 4 about transmisson problem. I will take the risk to try a japanese car, lol.

I guess I missed the knocking part in your original post.

What do you mean by "slipping" in first? All automatics slip, it's how a torque converter works.

If you are talking about "slipping" during 1-2 shifting (which is different than "slipping" in first gear), then if you disconnected the battery it will take a little while to quicken the shift speed back up again.

Almost sounds like an input piston.

Do you press the gas and sometimes it just sits there..then bangs into gear and off you go?

Exactly, except the car just before the bang, look very slow for 1 second.

I mean, i press the gas a bit, than it's like i have a trailer on the car for 1 second and after , BANG and the car have normal power.

I check the fluid when engine hot, idling in Park position.

Had a ABS trouble like 1 month ago. Replace the wire and no light since. Other than that, TPMS light is on because winter tires.

sounds good then. when my abs acts up sometimes it locks my brakes up, and it takes a fair amount of gas pedal till it breaks free.

User error!?

Not to bust your chops, but... I beat on my cars and don't have issues like that with the tranny's. just sayin...

anyways, you didn't do the shift kit so there's no chance you messed the lines up... What about the filter, is it possible you didn't seat the filter properly?

Yeah no offense. It ain't the car(s) dude. It's you. I'm on my second supercharged grand prix and I drive like an 18 year old all around town and i've never had any tranny problems. I understand every car is different but 4 out of 4 trans problems suggests user error.

Good luck fixing it.

Oh yeah guy's. Nice answers. Now it's me. Ok, but please, explain me how i could f*** 4 transmissions, when i drive like my grandfather because i know since my first w-body that the trans are less solide than crystal? I push the gas pedals not straight? No modification on any cars exept suspension mods.

Before my 4 last gm's,i had others cars, different brands and never had trans problem... I loved GM's, was ready to buy a nice Tahoe 2007-2009 but i think i will look at Toyota.

Thank you for the input.

The 4T65 isn't exactly known for being a great trans. Every factory one I've dealt with has had issues. Built ones hold better. I'd just find another trans to throw in it...probably from TEP. Then again, I have the ability to rebuild them, so I'd probably build my own before I paid someone else to do it.

Sounds like filter is loose. Also I would use dex 3 and possibly a bottle of lucas tran fix with anything but a rebuilt tranny.

Really? On a platform that is known for tranny problems?
