weird shifter problem

97 GP GT. The car shifted out of park fine, but when I got to school, I went to shift it into park. The shifter was stuck between P and R. It would not go all the way into park so the car was rolling backwards (and it wasnt in reverse either).When it got stuck, the button on the shift knob acted like the brake wasnt pushed in.Finally after playing with it for about 5 minutes I got it to go into park. After school I went to autozone to get oil, and it did the same thing, only this tiime I coulnt get it to go into park at all. So I had to tear apart the whole thing in the autozone paking lot. I seen a little white rocker piece and i pushed it. After i pushed it, the shifter finally went into parka and I drove home and it hasnt done it since.

So anyone know what would cause this. Is it the neutral safty switch? and if so, why would it not allow me to switch into Park?
And what is that white rocker for anyway? and any idea if pushing this caused my shifter to work all of a sudden?
 


That sort of happened to mine. Except mine didn't get stuck in between, it would just get stuck in park. I.just zip tied the white tab down and it has been fine since, I actually forgot about it until I read this haha
