Weird noise coming from my engine bay *with video's*

GPF Mr. President
Ok I just got this 01 gtp with 115k miles. It has always made this noise when it's on. It doesn't go away, only gets quieter as I accelerate. It is consistent with the rpms as in it get's louder or quieter. I just put a new alternator in because someone thought that this is the problem, but it didn't stop it.

Someone told me that the supercharger is vibrating slightly and said that maybe one of the bearings is out inside of the snout.

Let me get your guys opinion with it:

Vids:
YouTube - Weird engine noise.
YouTube - Weird noise in Engine

The vid's volume is a little weird it doesn't sound exactly like that. It's more of a mellow aehhhh sound.

Also what does it mean if the whole engine jerks when it's in idle? I just noticed this today when I started it, I can feel the car move slightly back and forth because of the engine from inside of the car. Someone told me motor mounts?

the car jerking is probably engine mounts

Have you tried pulling the blower belt and seeing if the noise is still there

Sorta sounds like power steering but I own a couple fords too so thats always the first thing i look at with engine noises like that

x2 with wicked intent. Just do some troubleshooting. First off, the easiest things would be to check your power steering fluid. They can growl like that if low on fluid. If its within operating range, turn the wheel and see if the sound changes much or is jerky when you turn the wheel. Could be a bad pump. If you don't find anything, pull off your sc belt. If its still the same, I would look into the alternator. The bearings could be going out if it. Pull the surpentine belt, see if the shaft has play, and spin it to make sure it spins smooth. If you still don't find anything, I'd look into the water pump. It could be going out. With the serpentine belt of, check it the same as you did the alternator. Also spin all of your idlers and tensions and see how they feel. Just a few suggestions. It really sounds to me like the alternator or power steering pump. Not sure if you will find any answers, but it's a start! Good luck.

I've had to replace several idler pulleys over the years. They made similar noises but never as terrible as the noise yours makes. The way I usually isolate the noise is with a engine stethescope (sp?). it has a long solid piece of wire that you can touch to different components to isolate which one is making the noise. Then you can drive to the parts store without having to put the belt back on!

A nice long screwdriver works too. cheaper and easier to find, just hold it right to your ear and it acts almost as a stethoscope. Lol

Thanks guys for all the reponses!

I don't think it's the power steering because it doesn't whine when the steering wheel is moving. It makes more noise when throttle is opened. I don't think it's the alternator since it's a brand new one replaced not even a couple of days ago. A lot of people that have heard this car right away pointed to the alternator which is why that was the first thing I replaced. Now I have an extra alternator sitting in my garage since that wasn't the problem.

My next step is removing the S/C belt and trying to see if that's the problem is somewhere within that set of pulleys.

It's fine to remove the S/C belt and still run the car right? This is my first supercharged car so I don't know to much about them yet. I'm leaning towards the supercharger, but we'll see.

Also if I replace the bearing, can I run the car without the belt on the supercharger and the snout off the supercharger? Probably not, but I'm not sure..

Thanks everyone.

you can run the car with out the blower belt but i wouldnt romp on it or any thing and the nose off the blower wouldnt work and still be driveable

When you take the s/c belt off, and if the noise stops, I would say it's time to replace the bearings. If that's the case, go ahead and put a new coupler in it too.

Just like my neighbors green gt, i can hear it pulling in a mile away :p

still sounds like power steering to me. Maybe power steering pump.

either p/s or and idler. eliminate the sc first. maybe then remove accesory belt and spin things around. maybe feel around on pullies for heat,. good luck
