water pump housing leak??

Anyone know how hard it is to pulloff the water pump housing and replace the gasket? I think mines leaking a little and it doesnt look like its the pump. It looks to me like its between the housing and the side of the block. I need to drive home to minn feb 12 and im trying to decide to fix it here of drive it home. The leak is small enough that i put about half a bottle of coolant in last weekend 1st time i noticed it. Doesnt consumer coolant into the oil so I dont think its the intake gaskets and I can see where it hits the ground also. Im pretty sure its the pump housing.
 


I know the pumps are cheap and look pretty easy to do honestly this being the 3rd gp ive owned ive never done one. Do you know where I can find the whole housing? I looked up the pump on Oreillys website and it looks like just the front part of the housing. You agree that since its not consuming antifreeze into the oil chances are pretty low its lower intake manifold gaskets right. Been a long time since Ive had to do a set of them too. Last was my sisters black 98 GP
 
The housing is the pump and vice-versa. Just order a water pump and that's all you 'll need. with some gaskets of course
 
Use gasket tack not rtv. Sometimes there is a weep hole where the internal seal will make a physical leak on the outside of the pump. The pumps are easy as heck to do the hardest part is cleaning the surface for reassembly.
 


i got a new waterpump with gasket for 35$ from napa.

its not that hard to change it. you will have to remove the power steering pump to get to the last few bolts. to pull the power steering pump off, simply access the bolts thru the holes in the power steering pulley and remove them. once that is off you can take the last few bolts off. its actually a pretty simple change.

i rtv'ed mine as well as putting the new gasket on. have not had a problem yet.
 
It's two 13 mm bolts to drop the power steering pump out of the way. You don't have to remove it
 
remove it/out of the way, same thing. its still gotta be "moved" to get that last few bolts out. but i guess your right, no i did not remove the lines going into the pump. simple removed the pump from its location and rested it off to the side.

but like said, it is a simple thing and i do agree the hardest part is cleaning the surface to get a clean mating surface with the new gasket.
 
after i washed the car today i degreased the engine and went to oreillys to get some brake cleaner and sprayed down the side by the water pump with the engine running so it would dry fast and its def not comming from the pump or the water pump housing that bolts to the block. I think its the damn o rings in the stupid heater bypass or whatever that small black PVC elbow is. Blanks me right now what its actually called. I also figured since its not getting coolant in the oil its not intake gaskets and since the leak isnt getting bigger and the temps never even near 185-190 range its not the pump either. I set the parking brake in the parking lot and reved the engine with my fingers and all I can seem to find is that pvc elbow very slowly leaking. Any one know how much I got to tear down to do that damn little elbow. 3 GPs and this is the first damn coolant leak ive had!
 


just take the belt tensioner off is that all to replace the elbow? I used to work at oreillys part time i know we moved alot of them but like i said this is my 1st coolant leak on 3 gps ive had
 
you gotta pull the that metal peice off too that the elbows go into that the heater hoses go into on the other side. its just a few bolts, but one is under the little lip, if your not looking hard enought its easy to miss.

once you do that, put the elbows in that peice first (get them in snug) then line them up to go in the lim or where ever they go (cant remember now) once you have them snug in there also, then tighten down that bracket.

you dont need to take the heater hoses off to do this. just kinda lay the bracket off to the side.
 
thanks guys im going to be on day shift here for the week until i graduate on friday and get to go home! I have to figure out when the automotive shop is open and i hope i can get it done before i leave here but i need to have it done in less than one day or else ill just fix it at home and bring some coolant with me. I have a shop and tools to work in at home i drove it about 250 miles this weekend and the temp never came close to 190. Id rather just drive it home and fix it their. I havnt even had to add 20 oz i bet since last weekend
 
you should be able to get it done with in an hour, 2 at the max. ive had to do it a few times chasing leaks down and i can probably get it done in about 20 mins.

if the car is cooled down/cold you wont lose as much coolent out of those elbows when you pull them off as you would when its hot.
