Water in trunk

It was nice out yesterday so finally decided to clean out the car. Well I removed my sub box and stuff from the trunk and took the carpet and spare tire out to make sure it was aired up just in case. Well when I lifted the tire out, I noticed about 2-3 inches of water in the bottom. Is there a pretty common leak in the trunk? I will be removing the spoiler today and raising that up to allow water and other crap to flow through.
 


Yup, not a big surprise there. You probably have a mess under your spoiler. :th_nervous: Remove it, clean and wax the area, and reinstall with a garden hose washer for each bolt hole.:th_thumbsup-wink:
 
Check your tail lights, if they have been removed for any reason, there is a good a chance that the water is coming in there. I have fixed 3 or 4 that leaked.:th_winking:
 
Ok well I had raised the spoiler and cleaned all that crap off and reinstalled with garden hose washers on each bolt and also sealed each bolt hole. That fixed the majority of the water in trunk. I did open it one day and still seen some condensation on the bottom of the trunk. Also it is still leaking somewhere on the right side. The area behind the wheel well is always soaked but I don't see any way for water to get in there. Any suggestions where to look?
 
My trunk is leaking as well, seems to have just started out of the blue. I have an old air mattress in my trunk to keep it clean as it catches all the dirt from my kids baseball & football gear, easy to wipe and vac. One day stuff was wet, figured a water bottle leaked. Then after a recent big rain stuff was soaked... oh boy! So, I opened the little ski door hatch on my back seat, got the flashlight out, poked my head thru the hole and then had my son shower water on various spots on the trunk. Spoiler was ruled out so we moved up towards the window area and yeap water came running into the trunk on the right side only and it almost looked as if coming in from an electric wire harness but that’s because the water was following path of least resistance. I then had him shower water only on the seam between the window and trunk and sure enough water was coming in which means my weather stripping is not holding up for some reason.

I'm not sure what to do, I could try to run a light bead of silicon down on the edge of weather strip but fear this will leave high/low spots and more water will come in. I read somewhere that I can try to adjust the trunk lid height so tonight I’ll see if this is possible. I know the compression lid shocks are shot so maybe with the trunk getting slammed hard sometimes things are out of alignment.
 
Or just order a new trunk gasket from the dealer? Any body panel misalignment should be self-evident when the trunk's closed.
 


I'd pull that carpet out and check your strut mount towers, I didn't even know I had holes rusting through until I read the common problems thread on here... Now trying to find a donor car in the junkyard and basically plasma cut out the donors towers and weld them into my car...PITA. Hope that's not your prob.
 
The weather gasket for the trunk is also the gasket around the window. Replacing this doesn't seem like it will be very easy. The gasket seems to be in good shape, it's not cracked or brittle so I still don't get why this leaking started unless the lip of the weather strip is just old and weak and now drooping. No matter what this stinks. Plus something is up with my gas door or fuel door lid where it doesn't open and close easily, i think the axle pin / hindge on the bottom is broke and rusted out. Plus my AC has a slow leak... Err my lovely GT, even after years of TLC i'm starting to lose it.
 
FIXED:

The stupid electric cable for the trunk light got pushed/bent when loading baseball gear in/out of my trunk so when I closed the trunk it was pinched in the weather striping and therefore letting rain water roll into the truck. Easy fix, bend the cable back. :th_thumbsup-wink:
