Water in floorboard (Take 2) - The Permanent Fix

well scotty, that flap HAS to come out with the whole cowl from the dealer setup. hope no water blows in the fan :( haven't got a mist in the face thus far.
 


the whole things another bad design by GM. wtf were they thinking with that crap anyways. why have the fan so open to the elements?

I don't think GM engineers in the 90s really thought things out very much, who puts foam behind a metal panel (gas door area)? That's just asking for rust. or the whole rocker setup, built to rust.

100% agree with that. If they had just made the metal extend down all the way over the fan opening, it would have never been an issue.
 


I've didn't remove wipes on the two piece cowling on my Impala nor the single piece cowling on my GP. I just turned the car on to get the wipers straight up the turned the car off. removed the plastic nuts holding it in place and the screw, and it was easy.
 
I had to replace my passenger cowl twice...my first one warped...and then the second one warped after going through the car wash...both 100 dollar fixes...fail fail fail on GM...ask the service advisor if there was a recall on it...none...don't know why if a lot of people are having this problem.
 
I picked up this peace for my 02 SE GP about a yar ago and it has worked. I recmmend getting it even if you haven't had any problems. I had to replace my blower motor and the resistor. DON'T WAIT.

Well, I had this in my other Grand Prix (water in passenger floorboard) and was fixed by a mechanic cause at the time, I wasn't in the Forum's and two I had no idea where the water was coming from. Cost me a fan motor and resistor too and was fixed with a bead of silicone at the weather strip there deflecting the water... wow! Not with this part...

Anyways... Ordered two pieces, one for each of my Grand Prix's... lol, haven't seen such a beautiful car part for $3 before! Fits perfect!

Interestingly, I've now ordered Cabin Air Filters too for the tray that's there, but empty!

I don't even know how they can even pay for shipping for $2.58, but what the heck, I'll take it!

I'm sure the shipping department is scratching their head with my order, going "Wait... It costs us $5 to ship a part, that the customer only paid $2.58 TOTAL for. Huh. Oh well, see ya, it's shipped."

Apparently, it's some GMC Buick Dealership (comes up as "Youngstown Buick GMC" on my paypal account). Figures. GM is dumb enough to make the mistake with the design, and then they're dumb enough to send us a fix for less than what it costs to ship the fix.
 
I can't beleive it took me 14 years to order this part for only $3.39... WOW... Thank you all for the info on this. Can't believe a fix so cheap and hopefully as simple as it sounds...
 
Ok please don't hammer me too hard on this...

1) Does this work for 2008 model year?
2) I understand the fix, but how do I get the water that's already down sloshing back and forth out? I can't see from the pictures if I can just reach down and soak it up.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure... but the part is only a few bucks so whats to lose?

The old way would be to use rags to soak it up, wring them out and do it again till water was all gone, lol. New way would be use a wet/dry vac...

the part was designed for 06+ gp's iirc or something like that so it should fit most all wbodies with minimal modifications
 


How about the Cabin Air Filters - will they work on the 97 GTPs? I don't have a try there for it. Just a nice big opening where is should go..

Open it up and take a look, not really a tray so to say, but an edged lip. Measure the opening regardless and the search the dimensions of the filters and match it up, you want a filter with a slightly larger size than the opening.

Just make it work if you want a filter there and there's no provision for it. Simple metal lattice or wire mesh could be used to keep the filter above the fan, etc...

Never had a leak, did this mod anyways. Months later I have a lake on my passenger floor. Sucked up the water last night, and had another puddle this morning. I hate chasing water leaks.
