Volume turns up randomly

I got a 98 GTP coupe, everything's stock including audio system. I have the cassette player with EQ and 6CD in the trunk which I don't use. I find that once in a while, shortly after i start up the car and back out of my driveway/parking spot, the volume of my stereo starts to go up until it reaches an INSANE level and I have to manually turn it back down.:th_scratchhead: I use a cassette adapter to listen to my zune mp3 player.

I usually use my steering wheel controls for volume or mute and thought maybe the knob was set to a higher position, but that's not the case. A friend of mine who used to have a Bonneville said his stereo would turn itself up slightly based on speed, to compensate for road noise, but it never went haywire like mine does haha. All my fuses look good. Haven't found anything in my owner's manual about the problem. Bad connection? Anybody else had this problem with their sound system?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Well, you might have a 1 in a billion problem. But probably not. Just realize the speed controlled volume has several settings. On my car there are 4 settings. Low, normal, high (compensation) and off. Try turning yours off and see what happens.

i had a problem kinda like that, sometimes when i turned the volume up it would actually get quieter and vice versa. probably just the head unit breaking. the clock also quit working on mine. i had one that i put in and it's all good now. maybe it's the speed compensation messing up. my advice would be to replace it, you'll defintely save yourself a headache and if you shop around it won't be all that expensive. good head units are like $100 - $140, generic replacements can be as cheap as $20. it'll sound a whole lot better too :th_thumb-up:

after thoroughly checking, i don't think i have speed compensated volume. prob. just the head going or a bad connection, noticed today that it likes to jack itself up when i hit a bump haha. i'll just go out and get a head this weekend. thanks guys!
