voltage fluctuations DIC

ghostgt

New member
I have just recently purchased a 07 GP GT. I love it. I had
a 99 GTP and have wanted another GP since I totaled out the 99.
Anyway, the first prob I have had is the battery. It had been on the
lot a while before I bought it and the pos post was badly corroded.
I noticed after charging the battery that the voltage on the DIC
would range from 12.8 to 14.56. Is this normal? I was just wondering
if it changes depending on the load. Every other car I have owned
has always had analog guages. I have since had to replace the
battery, but the voltage still fluctuates. I just want to head off
any problems...like being stranded with a dead battery again. So
far with the new battery I have not had any problems. Just need
some piece of mind. Any help is greatly appreciated.:th_scratchhead:

Thats what I was afraid of. I guess that means a trip to the dealership for a alt check up. How often do the alts go out on these models? How accurate is the batt voltage on the DIC. I mean it seems to me that when it drops to 12.9 that the headlights would dim some...they don't.

sorry Blown97, I did not see your post. I guess I will just keep and
eye on it and if it does not give any probs I will not worry about it.

Yeah Sabre is correct, voltage should be about 12.6v with engine off and about 14 - 14.5v when engine is running. But you got to remember, when your at idle your alternator is spinning relatively slow. If your car is requiring more power by running your lights, A/C, blower or stereo the volts may be a little lower due to the demand for power possibly being greater then the alternator can provide at idle speeds. When you raise the rpms the volts should go up as the alternator spins faster and is able to generate more electricity.

Thats the part I don't understand. This thing is doing everything just the opp of what it should. It shows 14.4 when I am driving at night with the lights, fan, radio and heated seats on. When I drove home today with on the radio and daytime lights on it was down to 12.9 when I got home. This is not at idle. But, it does not change much at idle. The next time I start it it might be at 13.8 or 14.5.
There just does not seem to be any conscistency at all. I had read somewhere on another site that the computer regulates the output of the alt. I was just wondering if it is adjusting the voltage to meet demand.
