Valve train questions

ok I have a set of 105 springs and retainers along with a set of 1.9 rockers. If for some reason I cant change the valve springs myself would it be ok to leave the stock sprigs and retainers on untill i get around to putting the 105's on??
 


never mind i guess i kind of answered my own question.. said at zzp that these will work with stock everything as long as shift points arent over 6000.

I never ran anything but stock springs back when I had 1.9 modded rockers, and had no problems. My son has 1.9 modded rockers now and he has a totally stock valve train on a 99 GTP with 110K miles.

You are right the powerband with a stock cam drops off way before 6K rpm.
 
Yeah i need to get it dynoed and see whe it is really at after i put the mods in my sig on. i can get one done for like 120 with unlimited pulls
 


lol it's with a guy i know....he has a dyno at his house.... as far as tuning goes....bring some cash down and i can help ya out with the tuning lol...if your seriouse about the dyno or tuning just leme know and im sure we can hook something up..

Ummmm, I would replace those springs while your in there, this is coming from someone who knows better.

I installed 1.9 rockers 5 years ago on my car when it had around 70k on it. They were the stock modified and back then NO ONE changes out springs. Big mistake I would come to find out last year. Fast foward to last year and the car has 155,000 miles on it. Driving home from work on the interstate crusing about 65mph in OD and I broke a valve spring out of the blue. LUCKILY I didn't drop or bend a valve somehow. I think I shut the car off just in time before something major could of happened. Since the car was a DD at the time, I towed it home, got a new valve spring and valve seal and installed it. Months later I changed all the springs, retainers w/ CC 105s, PRJ Viton Valve Seals, PRJ Reusable Rocker Bolts, and new VC gaskets. Keep in mind, this car was NEVER shifted past 6K!

Do it right the first time, don't half ass it. Get the springs, retainers, and you might as well do the seals too. It'll only cost ya $150 and it will potentially save your motor. You most likely won't get lucky like me. I've preached this many times, if your adding 1.9 rockers or planning on installing them, do the CC 105 springs and retainers NOW before its too late. Whats $150 verses $1,000? Not doing the springs is half assing it, period. Expect failure otherwise....
 
Did you have to do anything with the timing chain to runt he 105s? I keep hearing about the dampener, and if I open up the front cover I was only planning on replacing the chain and dampener with OEM.
 


Just swap the chain and dampener for 105s. The only side effect is increased wear of the dampener. It will have to be replaced a lot sooner due to the stronger springs.

I've only got about 67k right now... Maybe 75k tops by the time all this happens. Still think I should replace it first thing? Or can I run them a little while and replace it a little down the road?
 
You could, but why? It's a pain to remove the timing cover, so I would opt to do it as few times as possible.
 
I have the springs and everything...just not sure if i have all of the tools to do the job...plus it's a dd so i will prob just put it off for a lil while untill i can take some time off of work
 
To change valve springs, all you need in an air compressor and spark plug adapter, valve spring compressor, and a magnet (make getting the valve locks out a piece of cake). I'd also recommend replacing valve seals while you're in there. For that, a pair of pliers to remove them and a socket that fits over the valve stem to push the new ones on.

Why would I be removing it more this way? Instead of opening the front when I do the springs, I was going to do it a little bit down the road. I don't have forever to work on my car like I used to, so bits and pieces is better for me.
 
I figured since you would have stuff off the top, it would clear extra room for access. If you're short on time though, it can't be helped.

I learned my lesson a while back about working on cars and I have two, so I always have one that is drivable.

I may still do it since I'll have the crank off. Could I get away with just the dampener or do I need a new chain?
