Valve spring retainers for S1X cam?

As of now I am running 1.9 modded rockers and 105# crow springs. I also have viton valve seals and ZZP LS style "steel" retainers. Down the road a bit I am planning to get a cam, either the S1X or the XP. I have heard that with the XP cam I would need to get the "modified steel" retainers from ZZP, but what about the S1X? Intense's website site states it can be used with stock rockers, seals, retainers, etc. However, the S1X is so close to the XP that I assume would mean I would need the modified retainers with it as well? Or would my current valve train set up be okay with the S1X? - 105 springs, ZZP regular steel retainers (not modded), and viton valve seals. I want to do it right the first time, and not have problems with the road.. I'm sort of confused...

If you're getting 105 springs, you need retainers. Not 100% on if you need the viton valve seals with the S1X, but I would get them anyway and put them in regardless since you're already in there and it's easy at that point.

i'd say so, unless your guides are milled.

.526" lift is too much for stock guides.

the seals should give you enough clearance though.

Did you not fully read my post? I already have crow 105's and LS1 style retainers installed along with the valve seals. My question is, do I need to change the standard LS1 retainers to the modified LS1 retainers?

The intake side is ok to use non-modded retainers, good clearances.

The exhaust side should probably use modded retainers for longevity, as the S1X has more exhaust than intake lift. Its likely at high rpm they will just barely kiss the valve seals and over time prematurely wear them out.

I would recommend buying a set of modded retainers and installing them on the exhaust side (less work than re-doing all 12 retainers, since yours are already installed)

Then sell the 6 leftover modded retainers and 6 non-modded retainers as a package for someone else looking to upgrade to an S1X.

Running modded retainers on all 12 won't hurt anything, it just isn't necessary.

I'd disagree.

Even with modded retainers, you are installing fresh springs. Typically we are using an LS spring that expects an install height of 1.800. Which we don't even have with modded retainers.

Add on that why would you want to have different spring seat pressure intake vs exhaust.

Old post.. but the info is still relevant.

LS1 retainers vs modded LS1 retainers don't change the installed height of the spring.. The modded retainers just have a little machined off the bottom inner part to provide more clearance between the retainer and valve seal when the spring is commpressed.

Installed height for both LS1 and modded LS1 retainers should be the same, which wouldn't change his seat pressure at all.

Unless i am missing something?

Ahhh, I thought you meant leaving some stock retainers on there, and or leaving stock springs. Sorry, must have misread.
