V-8 vs. V-6 supercharged



Thanks to all for the replys and ideas. I dont have the car the insurance company already took it. Wish I could of pulled offf parts, but they wouldn't allow anything to be taken. I was trying to see the good and bad side in the car from people that had a GXP and do most of the work themselves. I read a lot of stupid reviews(could just be stupid people) where they take them into the shop all the time, and hate the car. Could just be they dont know their car and I dont trust all the work they do at the shop. I read scary stuff after I bought the GT but soon reliazed most of the reviews were of people who dont even do their own oil changes let alone when to do any fluid changes. With all the pro and cons I just think I'll wait until I find another GT, then I'll just mod it.
 
Just giving you a heads up, 04-05 GT level were not supercharged. 06-07 GT were supercharged, and they dropped the GT all together in 2008. If you plan on modding it I would suggest getting a 04/05 GTP as the 06-07 have issues with pcm issues that some can't be tuned or if they can something is incorrect. And as scottydogs has said in many posts, buy yourself a good cheap socket set (~$40) and you can do most repairs yourself. The GM 3800 is a pretty straight forward engine to work on, and there is a lot of useful information on here with people that offer good support.

06/07 has aluminum LIM gaskets and you just swap in an 04/05 pcm to tune... gas gauge reads backwards. If you're not going to do a cam, I'd suggest 06/07. Backwards gas gauge (or paying overkill for a gauge-friendly tune) beats a LIM job.
 
How does that beat it? I paid $45 for gaskets, and $20 in coolant, $5 for elbows, $6 for black RTV. That is it. $76 dollars and couple hours of work I magically have aluminum LIM. Plus many of the later '05 have aluminum LIM. Mine was manufactured in February.
 
^ amen. Wouldn't limit myself just to 06-08 because of the Lima. Spend a few bucks..take a few hrs of your time and boom your good to go.
 


I have an 06 GXP I purchased 4 months ago and I love the thing. The trans does run really hot in the city when I got it it was running round 220 degrees...I pit two trans coolers and an oil cooler on it and it runs on average round 170 180 now. Cheap fix for the heat problem. As for suspension I love it but when I bought it I ended up replacing the struts hubs and most basic parts in the front and rear. Down side is it is front wheel drive but I am still fine with that as I'm not in the burning out wheels kinda person. The monsoon sound system is OK but I spent a little money on it and put an auxiliary input and kicker amp and sub in and kept the stock radio. As for engine mods it is quite a bit pricier than the 3800v6 which I used to have. But I like the gxp.

Only problem I have with my gxp is oil consumption. The tranny does climb to 220 if I'm a prick to it. A few simple mods and it can be a very dependable car. Maintenance does get pricey, but it's expected with high trim levels on any model/make.
 
I may have seen you at Base Cocor. I see alot of white GXP around here.

I've owned my 2008 GXP for over a year. Transmission replaced just about 1K miles ago. Internal failure(They said it S*** itself)
Other than that I have the ABS issue that I'll be taking back to the dealship to work on what they broke. I love the car and I'm in it 100 miles a day. I drive 95% highway so I get great MPG. My engine is great and other than another opps by the dealership I have had no issues with it. No oil consumption issues or anything like it.

My father has a 1999 GTP and has very little issues himself. His transmission just went out a week before mine, but only small issues other than that. They both are very nice cars but I choose mine every day over his. You can get good power out of the V8 and same with the S/C 3800, but lets face it unless it's your toy you are not going to be doing much aftermarket stuff.

Get what you want man. That's all I've learned over the cars that I've owned. If you like it keep it, if not find what you want or you will never be happy.
 
or just have a boosted v8 hahaha. with few simple mods, trans cooler, shift kit uv allready made a great difference on the car. get it overkilled and drop teh trans pan twice the year.. beautiful cars tho, but like anything treat it like **** its gunna break
 
Boosting a gxp will make 600 crank HP ;) I have a GXP and I love the thing! Get a trans cooler, a shift kit/ trans tune, and disable DOD so you don't consume oil, and you should be set for reliability. I love the sound of a v8 and the rumble with the poly mounts. My mirror shakes at 2k rpms from the rumble, haha I love it.
 


]I ended up buying this 2007 GT with 35,000 miles on it. Had to buy from another state to get what I was looking for, probably paid too much. Dont EVER buy a car from Germain Of Columbus, these people are scum. In the first month the water pump went out, had coolant leaking, they wanted me to drive it over 1000 miles round trip to have it fixed. Ended up getting a check mailed to me to have it fixed. When I was having that fixed found out the wheel bearings are really bad. Ordered those and a K&N air filter, will fix this week I hope. This car gets ****y gas milage compared to the red one I had, hoping the K&N fixes that, the other car had one. Thought with the low miles I wouldnt run into issues, but this car has already had more problems than the red one. From sitting I guess. Thanks to all the replys, anyone changed their wheel hubs before? Im changing out the whole hub instead of the bearings alone

the hub and bearing are one unit. always have been. ****ty gas mileage would indicate that you should probably look into the car and see whats going on. o2 sensors,plugs wires etc...im sure you know the drill.
 


How much would you want for the smashed one as sits? My dad does repairables and may be interested in this one to fix or use for parts. PM me details if need be.
