URGENT cam question

I bought a cam here that was supposedly new in box. When I went to take it out of its packaging, it was sticking to it. I cleaned the sticky gunk, but it looks like something stayed from the gunk. I can't get it off. Can someone help me to tell me if this cam is safe to run? Here are pictures:

Also, can you tell if this cam is actually new? If not, I'm pretty sure my cam project is toast, since school starts in a couple of days and I am not going to risk it.

P.S. sorry about the multiple threads. Just on the heels of this thing and hadn't prepped the cam before..

i dont see the typical wear marks of a used cam. it does look like its been left out in open air maybe. steel wool should clean that rust looking spot off the end.

Ok I see them now on my computer. That doesn't look like wear marks. Take - little bit of WD and steel wool 0000 and clean it up a bit and then make sure you to lube it properly when you install it.

Looks like slight rust pitting to me. Not ideal but I would run it. The worst looking part on the end is where the cam sprocket bolts to so that does not matter because there is no movement there once the sprocket is bolted up.

Only if you send me the car afterwards. :th_biggrin2:

I just tried to do the 0000 steel wool with the WD-40, but it didn't even take a little bit off. Is it safe to run the cam as-is? I just don't want something on the cam to cause problems a couple thousand miles down the road

It just looks like gunk..not actually wear marks so I would not be concerned if it was my cam.
