Upper intake explosion.

Last Friday afternoon my UIM literally exploded when I tried to start the engine.
I had removed and disassembled the TB,sprayed some brake clean around the
opening of the UIM to remove coolant residue, wiped the gasket surface and
re-installed the TB 30-45 minutes later. Then when I tried to start it,BOOM!
All I can figure is a valve wasn't closed all the way.Been driving for 10,000 miles
with lifter preload ranging from .053-.152. What would cause that much lifter
preload? Comp Cams shows .030 to be perfect and any more than .040-.060
is considered excessive.Machinist that prepped heads did not return calls.
Will do leak down test in few minutes. Thanks for any suggestions.

One suggestion: For a couple of years there was a recall on the FPR's on teh NA motor. Give GM a call and see if your recall was ever done. If not, you know where the issue occurred.

Very interesting. I will call the dealer.
I just didn't think a valve would be open when the last compression test was good.
The cam hyd. rollers,p-rods and valve springs were all recommended for my
application by Comp Cans.

Recommened for what?

Brake cleen evaporates into the atmoshpere - if you bolted the TB back on, you created a nice resting place for the flamable gas & fluid to stay, ready and waiting...

If you have ever seen a nitrous backfire, you will understand how easy it is to do with any type of flammable fluid or gas...
If you do it in a car that doesnt have a plastic UIM - you will see some serious damage...

replace the UIM - and next time blow the UIM out with air after using any cleaning fluids.

In for pics. Just cause I've never seen this on a GP.

When I had a nitrous backfire a few years ago on my GA it blew the intake to pieces.

My intake scattered into many pieces as well.sorry about the no pics to all, they transferred from my phone to the pc,but now I'm having trouble finding them.Phone was defected out at device center last Wed. for freezing and blank screens (scrotorola atrix 4-G).
I still must find a way to post pics on this forum, many good ones to share.
