Okay. So my new, used Buick regal had the odometer gauge out. I assumed it had 170,000 from the carfax report I purchased. Today though I fixed the digital odometer and it read 108xxx miles. Should I be jumping up and down like a happy little girl shrieking? or should i discredit the car fax and the dealers estimation. I have no idea how long the light has been out for, but i imagine even though the cluster has been out, the computer would still accurately read the odometer. Wouldn't it? When I was driving today it was still reading right going up a mile on a road I know is only a mile long and so on.
 


I'd say just count it as less miles and move on. Most likely when the dash quit the owner/dealer just estimated the mileage from the last point when it worked and came up w/ 170,000.
 
the mileage is stored in the cluster not the cars pcm, so when you fixed it, thats your real miles.


i had the same problem, my cluster was out too, the last title said 160,xxx, for a 98 not to bad i thought, bought the car, fixed the cluster and it said 212,000. i was like oh boy.......


if i were you i would have the mileage fixed. if you have not titled it yet its easy. its better that way so every thing is correct on its history. better for a resale on your end too.

i fixed my cluster before i went for a title, and had to fill out some form for a odometer statement. because it was so far off from its records. i just explained what happened and they were pretty cool about considering im in NJ.
 
cool thing about RI is that you don't need a title for a car over 10 years of age. so no need to worry about the mile issue. Just wanted to know if there is a way to figure out which is most accurate. for fixing mechanical issues, maintenance and such.
 
id trust the cluster, and giving your car a good once over, bumper to bumper, i do this before i buy it so i know what i'm up against before buying.

paying a shop 50 to 100 bucks for a inspection is always money well spent. i beat the dealer down pretty hard when i bought my car due to lots of very fixable issues, they dont know im doing the work, so you add up all the things wrong with shop prices, and use that against them on the price.

id be happy its that low myself.

OP.. and fellow Regal guy. There are a couple different scenarios I see. The cluster may have been swapped at some point or you are just lucky and the previous ownder didn't drive a lot.

If the title doesn't have mileage on it. I'd smile and go with the lower mileage. Our cars run forever anyhow..why age it if you don't need to?
