yes, thank you
im getting tired of being the only one who gives a damn about our little motors
No, there are plenty of people that care...it's just the rediculous claims I have seen that make me NOT want to give a damn...
The constant LIM and head gasket issues in addition to the lack of aftermarket make it quite the turn-off.
This.
3100/3400's are notorious for top end problems.
Nope!
The 3.8's and the 3.1's both have the same incidence of LIM and head gasket issues, the 3.1 is not any worse than the 3.8! As noted above, as long as you take care of the 3.1 motor, it's longevity is the same as the 3.8. Dexcool coolant is the suspected culprit for both motors and as long as you replace the Dexcool with the regular "green" antifreeze, these motors are bullet proof-both of them!
3100/3400 motors have head gasket issues...in which the 3800's don't.
I have 120,000 miles on 3.1 2001 GP and I replaced the dexcool at 60,000 miles-zero issues with either the LIM or the head gaskets! Have a neighbor with a 3.1 with over 200,000 miles on his 3.1-zero issues. Mechanic friend that routinely works on GM 3.8/3.1's states emphatically that the LIM/head gasket issues with the V6's is the same for both motors-he has done many on cars with dexcool and almost none on cars with green antifreeze as long as the Dexcool was replaced at fairly low mileage.
That's great...doesn't mean other people are so lucky...general maintence on ANY motor can make it run for a very long time...it isn't just the 3100.
The 3.1 is a great motor as is the 3.8 but the constant bashing of the 3.1 is just NOT true or warranted. I actually prefer the 3.1 over the previous three 3.8 V6 cars that I have had since my slightly modified 3.1 has the same power now (real world driving, not dynoed!) as the stock 3.8's that I owned with slightly better highway fuel economy and significantly better around town fuel economy.
Yeah, real world...toss it on a dyno and see that it probably makes a solid 20 wheel HP less than a 3800.
i have a 05 impala LS, it had single exhaust, i got dual exhaust from 2008 Impala SS with a 5,3l. i always thought dual exhaust was just for looks, your telling me i gained some horse power? good to know!
It is all about looks. However, IT IS DYNO proven, that any W-Body exhaust flows very well for stock...and anyone claiming power from a catback is crazy. People have actually dynoed and lost power from a catback...since the factory unit flows VERY well up to 350~FWHP. I'm not saying a catback can HURT really...but I wouldn't waste my money on more than a muffler to change the sound if that is what your going for.
seems like their is actually a group on here that cares for the 3.1l! yay!!! i plan on getting a 3.8 a little down the road but for now my 2002 GP SE is doing fine and has some serious pep! heck i just beat a 3.8l v6 on the highway about half an hour ago... then again hes bone stock and i now have a ncie CAI, 56mm TB, new exhaust, and am in the process of a tune (so far i just opened up the limiter and drew out the shifts a bit) i pulled ahead a bit at first and held it until he hit his speed limiter (i know he did because he stopped accelerating and i didn't), did it a couple times with the same result! i keep telling him to get a CAI, exhaust and a few other cheap upgrades but hes not nearly as into performance as anyone on here
Noted.
But.
You do realize stock 3800's knock even in N/A form from the factory correct? Which means pulled timing...and possibly even making less power than your car...sure...especially if yours is in good shape. I'd be willing to bet my custom tuned N/A 3800 with NO knock on the junk 91 I run in it everyday would put a hurtin' on any 3100 car on this forum.
well i have cold air intake(filter is in my bumper) ubend delete, and the dual exhaust. next will be Plog and a downpipe.
Here ya go...don't waste your money on a "dual exhaust"...really. If I had a 3100...
I'd top swap it...3400/3500 Top End, Ported Throttle Body, Custom Tuned PCM, Milzy's PEM's, 3" Catless DP, TransGo Shift Kit, P&P'd heads with Milzy's Stage 2 Cam.
I'd be willing to bet it'd get close to 200 WHP and run with a Full Bolt-Ons 3800's car...but then your at the point to where the 3800 has spent less than a grand and your a couple grand into yours...which at this point I would have just snailed the damn thing to begin with...like the 3400 Grand Am guys have...and make some pretty decent power.
Does anyone know if the ubend delete they sell on milzy will fit a 95 with the 3100? i dont see why it shouldnt but id like some thoughts before i spend a couple hundred on one to find out it doesnt fit lol
Honestly...just take it to your local exhaust shop and toss it up on the lift and have them cut it out...along with your cat...because emissions are lame.
Lastly...just for S&G's...I'd like to see you 3100 guys get to the track and get some times. Just to see how they compare to the 3800. That way there isn't anymore of this "3100 hate" crap going around.
