Since I have had this thing for almost three weeks and have worked on it the entire time I figured I should start a build thread. I bought this 2000 GP GT for a measly 900 with no automatic function on the trans.
no worries. Better pics to come. It has 238k-ish miles, rust, and leaks.
A buddy had bought it a few days earlier for a little less and pulled the trans pan and found a chunk of forward band in the pan.
he planned to pull the trans and send it out to get rebuilt but offered the car to me instead since he already had a beater and wanted the next generation gtp. I couldn't pass the offer up. I've never been inside a transmission before and with the money I'd be investing total into the car I figured I could try my hand at fixing it myself and if it blew up I could still pay for the trans to be rebuilt by a pro and sell it and still make money...if it doesn't blow I'm gonna keep it and run it and build the truck.
I began right away with this car. The engine and trans had been pulled already when I bought it. Not a big deal. Just means I have to drive ten minutes to go work on it and go home instead of having it all in my garage. Oh well.
I got everything apart in one day basically. What a mess. I had fluid all over the floor. Three million bolts split up by parts they retained and head size if there were too many like the case cover and valve body bolts. Wrapped and taped in shop towels.
I came here looking for information on parts and was referred to transtar. Oh my is that place cool. Guy gave me a ton of free stuff. I ended up returning there a few times for various parts that I either found damaged or I broke and the guys were very knowledgeable.
Also dropped by ZZP to pick up a few things as well. Engine mount was shot. Like way shot.
With my brand new atsg manual in hand I began inspecting parts. I replaced a couple second steels, tcc solenoid, pressure regulator (I think that's what it is on the valve body) also got in a trans-go shift kit and all three bands and the 4th gear shaft that always strips out. All new seals and o rings on things I pulled apart, a full power wash and degrease on the case and covers.
I really didn't find much else. The manual made it insanely simple. I still don't know how everything spins and works together but I completely understood the need for bearings and fluid dampening between parts, how to remove inspect and replace everything. Now it's just a matter of seeing how well I did.
Sadly I found the crankcase pan gasket leaks like a sieve. So that's getting replaced. I need a torque Convertor bolt. Oil filter. Synthetic oil. I'm a firm believer in synthetics. I'll start a thread for the truck and you'll see why in there.
Pic whoring time!
all clean!
everything inspected and preassembled ready to install.
progress!
valve body good
it's ready.
and now it sits ready to go in the car after a couple small things are done
Any questions?!
