Turbo/ Supercharge question

why is that?? i would think that would strengthen the engine, and give more power anyway?

Research would find that the factory bottom ends are very stout and don't need upgrading. It's the valvetrain and the horribly factory casted heads.

But who does research?

If you want to maintain a power level that's fun, but won't entirely ruin your transmission I'd just do a cheap intake, set of headers and a 3.5-3.6 pulley with a custom tune. Super cheap and pretty impressive gains.

Would would a 3.5 inch tensioner pulley do to help a NA motor? Less belt slip on the alternator or something?

So i have a 3.8l non turbo. I am looking at putting a turbo kit in it.. What exactly do i have to do to make this happen? any suggestions on kits, etc? Thanks

If you can afford a base kit, and dont want STUPID HUGE power, you can buy the kit, on a saturday, have it shipped to your house by thursday, and be out boosting the crap out of your ride saturday night beating any and all m90 powered cars, with little to no experience working on cars, and you can still leave your motor largely stock. In terms of untouched completely factory everything 3800's I have taken a few well over the 400whp on E85/race gas, so anyone that complains that you need supporting mods is lying, as my 93 octane stuff still made between 350-375whp, which beats out any m90/tvs car.

If you wanted to try to build a cheap turbo kit then you might want to increase the complexity and complication level a bit, but you could do it for really cheap.

I feel that some members of this forum bend the truth on what it cost them to turbo their vehicle. If you are determined, however, you can find something that meets your goals in your general price range.

$2300 shipped to my door (full turbo(PT-61) kit with intercooler, PCM, 42lb injectors ready to bolt on)-used
$100-$150 on misc gaskets
$50-M90 block off plate

$2450 and my GTP was turbo on the 192,000 mile factory block

I opted to go ahead and get a built trans from Tim King:
$2100

$4550 and have some "reliable" fun-note also: well over the cost of what it could be realistically sold for.

With any turbo build you end up going a bit further than intially thought:
Stainless plog-$125
1.9 rockers-$250
L36 top swap/ported LIM/HVII/Ported TB/Gaskets-$350
Turbo Smart boost controller-$100
Turbo "snuggie"-$150

So in total I have spent $5525 on go fast goodies on a car that is valued in today's market between $2500-$3000 if that. But to me the fun factor was definetly worth the $3,025 :)

That is the question you need to ask yourself- How much is it worth to you to exceed the cars value in performance modifications?

Me personally I don't mind going over the value of my car because everything that I'm learning from this car I take as a learning experience for the next car which I plan on being a GTO or something like that. For example I just bought hp tuners I'm going to teach myself how to tune and I can use hp tuners on my next car. So for me buying hp tuners even though it was expensive it's not a waste because I can use it on any car I get as long as it's compatible with hp tuners which I plan on keeping general motors vehicles just because I like them. Keep in mind that a lot of people that have grand prix's are younger guys just out of high school and what not because they're relatively cheap and if you do f*** something up there not super expensive to fix they have a good learning experience to them that you can take with you to the next car. I view it like this once you have the mod bug you never get rid of it you will always want to do something to the car you own so everything is geared towards learning and having more experience.
