Trunk Lid Speaker Install



Looks great! I like the set up very simple, clean, the right amount of sound and not super over kill like most of the systems that are around my area lol The plexi glass idea is awesome! Good way to rep your school!
 
U could go public with ur own company and probly do pretty good. Lovin what you did. Im starting to spruce up my sound system and this looks like a sweet idea! :th_thumbsup-wink:
 


I appreciate it so much. It took a lot longer and cost a lot more than I ever thought it would but I finished it. Even after last summer all of it was stolen and I had to start all over it was worth it. Now I just have to come up with some more horseys to make up for all that junk in the trunk...:th_winking:
 
can you mow a write up on how you did this?? this is a super sweet idea and I want to do it. I also find myself being the source of music when my friends and I all hang out and have the same probles you mentioned
 
Yeah I can give you a quick jist of what was involved. First of all, this took a whole summer and a fairly considerable amount of money, tears and blood to complete, so be warned. I started off be removing the deckled, and fiberglassing two layers over it for the back contour of the back. Then I removed it and trimmed it. I then made the MDF backbone to fit my components, mount to the trunk itself and create the center area for the plexiglass. Once that was done, I found out where the mounting holes would go by test fitting it on the decklid. Once I had my mounting holes, there were 4 of them, simply bolted through the MDF into Nut-certs in the trunk, I did the outer skin fiberglassing by hot glueing a piece of felt over the MDF skin and around the backside of the back fiberglass. I hardened it with fiberglass resin. Then finished it with bondo, and color matched charcoal felt. I mounted my speakers and used my laser etcher to etch the plexiglass. I lit the plexi using two blue LED strips. I ran wires to each of the 4 speakers and to the LED lights. I controlled the speakers and lights with a 4 Pole double throw relay which was actuated of the trunk latch. This relay turned the lights on and switched the output from my 4 channel amplifier from the rear deck to the trunk speakers. I think thats a quick overview of the project! basically i think i will go without the plexiglass, although it looks AMAZING i just want to have the two speakers mounted on the trunk lid and have them switch from the back ones to those, either automatically like yours do or even by me switching a switch if its cheaper haha i have no amp powering my rear speakers though, i dont know if this makes a difference?
 
You can go with the relay like I did or a manual switch would work just fine as well. As for not having the amplifier, it shouldn't make a difference in function but obviously it will sound cleaner and louder if it were to be amplified.
 
A relay is basically an electronic switch. It has two terminals for the coil, or the switch itself. A relay can have a multitude of other contacts that are switched by the coil. In my case, I used a 4 pole relay, which means the switch can switch 4 different things at once. I used 2 for my rear speakers, one for the right and one for the left, and a third for the trunk lights. so look for a 12 volt 4 pole double throw relay. or 12v 4PDT for short
 
I know it's been a long time since I posted to this thread but I am thinking about selling my trunk speaker mount including the relay to control the lights and speakers. Is there any interest? Mounts just fine to any GP trunk lid. Let me know!
