Trunk lid mat - Part Two...

Wanted to make a trunk lid mat with recessed lettering. Ordered material last week, came in today had everything cut out, so figured I'd give it another shot. Don't think it came out too bad, the masking tape in the back might be a bit tacky, but ya shouldn't see it. Here's some pics, haven't installed it yet. Trunkliner material is the same as what comes in our trunks from the factory, so color is a direct match.

If some guys wanted some made, I'd do it. Wouldn't be anything elaborate though, no mirror lettering or anything like that. I could do GXP or GT or somthing similar in the correct font ("GRAND PRIX" would probably cost more). The trunk liner matches what we already have in the trunk. Yes it's made of foam board, and weighs next to nothing. I'm going to put this one in my car tomorrow night and I'll take pics.

Material wise, all I have in it is the foam board ($17), might be able to get 24x36 pieces (4) at a combined cheaper price, the trunkliner material ($10), push pins are $2.50 (6), a can of spray adhesive ($12) would last for 3 mats. If you wanted it like the above, I could put the trunkliner material on and send you the bare back piece and you could adhere whatever material you want to it. I'm just using masking tape to hold it up against the lettering.

Time wise, it took me about 4 hours to make the above, cutting out the letters is the ***** part of it... I haven't tried a raised lettering yet, but someone asked about doing one so I may attempt that. So with that all said, what do you think is a fair price?

Alot of profesional shops charge $150+ if you do a good enuff job i don't think $75.00 is a bad price to start at. Work your way up from there. I mean it sounds like you have roughly 42bux invested in it. You could profit 33 bux per mat or if you did $100.00 per mat you could make 58.00+ profit.

Either way if your going to start making them make it worth your time.

A guy I graduated with has a vinyl shop, I could go down there and get pieces of vinyl in various colors to use as the lettering color for the recessed ones. If they offer a chrome, that would be an option.

i'd be happy with one just like you made there. it looks great. the back really isnt an issue. I couldnt think of any kind of fix for that. I mean, u could wrap liner over the whole thing but that would be a waste...

im sure you will perfect these even more. your 2nd one turned out better than your 1st one IMO. :th_thumbsup-wink:

also, i am thinkin a raised lettering would be easier than recessed lettering. you would cut out your letters, and then secure them to a board. then take your material and cover the whole thing, and press the liner against the edges of the letters. You would need some sort of adhesive to make the material stay in place. its worth a try, but again, i would be happy with that exact one you just made

a guy in texas a few years back made mine i believe. called me and talked me through everything i wanted. which was basic. i believe his was only $75 and its mirrored. with carpet fasteners, looks pretty nice for having to cut mirror pieces. I also wanted it lit, and got a $50 (at the time) streetglow blue wire as the border. ill get a picture later for you guys to see how the neon turned out.

all in all its better than the plain trunk. id say your's look very professional from the front. $75 is a good asking price. and whatever s/h cost.

ok thats cool and thankyou but how big is a liner yard? i know a yard is three feet ssosooooo does that mean 3x3 or what?
