I opened my trunk one day and it wouldnt close, I got a part from the wreckers that supposedly worked. Put it in and it wouldnt work hmmmm. I bought a brand new trunk latch and it still doesnt work. When plugged in and I hit the button on my fab it unlocks. What could be the issue???? Very confused

Take a look in your owners manual. I know on the older models you couldn't have the car in gear. Maybe there's more to it in 08

My 2008 Grand Prix trunk latch just stopped latching today. It seems like everything works properly and is secure, so I can't figure out why it wont lock. If I stick a screwdriver through the latch (mimicking the loop on the car), the latch itself locks and unlocks properly. The latch does not seem loose or out of place, nor does the loop, and the trunk door goes down as far as it can. The hinges seem secure too. I just can't figure out why it wont latch when the door is closed. Did anybody figure anything out?

The stops are already in as far as they can go. I even removed the bottom panel because I thought maybe it was popped up on one side, but it still doesn't work. The last thing I can think of is loosening the loop bracket and pulling it up further, then tightening it down. I'm at work, so I'm trying to find some metric wrenches. It's on tight though, so I can't imagine that it got pushed down at all.

Ok guys, I fixed it. I loosened the outer nut on the loop bracket and pulled up on the loop as much as it could go, which wasn't very much, and then tightened the nut. That was just enough to make it work. Then I backed out the two bumper stops until it wouldn't latch, and then screwed them in a little further until it worked again. Since they were all the way in when I started, the latch may have bottomed out on the loop, forcing the loop down too far. Hopefully with the bumper stops out further, they will prevent this from happening again.
Scottydoggs, thanks for your suggestion. It was on the right track.

1/2 on track, i didnt know the loop could move.

i bet what happened was the latch lock may have been closed, then shut, and it pushed that loop down. or just time maybe. who knows, but good find.

same thing happened on my 97. Had to take the latch off and slot it so It would move down further and latch itself.
