Transmission will not shift into overdrive

I have a 1998 GTP with 155,000 miles on it. It has recently decided to not shift into overdrive. Top speed that I can drive at the moment is a whopping 45mph, and the steering is really shaky. I am a woman and always seem to get screwed over when it comes to having this car fixed when I have problems. Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be wrong, if the trans will have to come out to fix this problem, parts cost, etc. I just want to have a general idea of what "might" be wrong when I take it to the shop tomorrow. The more I know, the less likely I am to be overcharged to fix it!

Well, if it is just overdrive that's gone, it would be the 4th clutch hub. If you're maxing out at 45, though, it makes me think you're not getting out of 1st gear? Are you redlining at 45?

I took it to a shop, he said he thought it was the 4th gear clutch. He also said it would cost around $1,400 to fix it! Was he full of it or is this what it should actually cost to fix it? Like I said earlier, I am a woman and alot of shops see women coming. I don't have the $1,400 to fix it! Any sugggestions???????????:th_shakinghead1:

Oh yeah, it is not stalling at 45 mph. Its not red lining, the rpm's just jump once it gets around 3,000. I try not to go over 45 because don't want to screw up more than already is.

well if you have no fourth, youre not going to screw anything up. just drive it like normal, you can still drive 80+, just the rpms are gonna be a little higher. In order for the tranny shop to do it they are gonna tell you it just needs a rebuild, or at least charge you that much b/c its a pita to get to, and as you know shops get alot of money an hour.

$1400 is getting up into rebuild territory. Parts cost to fix the issue would be around $100 - $150, so they're charging $1250-$1300 for labor. I know it's a PITA, but that seems excessive to me for a job that can be done with the trans still in the car.

Then again, I always think shop prices are outrageous.

JennysGTP - have you had this repaired yet? Was it the 4th gear clutch? I am having the exact same symptoms on my 00 GT. I can run it all day in 3rd and it runs perfectly.

ughhhh same here on my 99 gtp i will do the work myself but im wondering WHAT THE HELL am i supposed to do ha =[ i hope parts arent expensive is some1 can shoot me a PM and explain this 4th clutch to me i would greatly appreaciate it. thanks aka TEM or Trannyman thanks guys ughhh im almost done with the engine now and this crap happens....

it is easier to work on with the tranny out of the car. just R&R, is about $900. i'd say they are pretty close on the price. a full rebuild these days will run more than $2200.

I had the same issue on my 01. I started by replacing the 4th clutch hub in the car, but ended up rebuilding the whole thing. It is a pita to do in the car, and there's no guarantee you won't be pulling the tranny anyway after all that work. If I had it to do over I would have just saved up & got a rebuilt unit from Trannyman.

Sounds like the 4th clutch is going. Start up a new thread and get some good input from these guys! Welcome to the forums.
