transmission went out on me with no warning.

i have a automatic 1999 gtp. i had my transmission go out on me 2wks ago with no warning. i can put in reverse and reverse fine. it does nothing in drive. however i can drive it by putting into 1 then shifting to 2 and so on. ive been told to check the torque converter and maybe something electrical with the transmission. any help would be appreciated. does anybody have a idea or thought on what i should look into.
 


The forward band let go. Dropping the shifter down into 1 will engage the manual 2-1 band, which is why you can move that way. You're looking at a rebuild or replacement, since getting to that band requires disassembling the entire transmission.
