Transmission temperature sensors

hi do our cars have TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSORS.my car is a 2001 gtp.i have a part number wanted to know if we have wone and where is goes .part number is 12129691. does this control the cold trans or does the coolant temp sensor.thanks.
 


Yes the 4T65E does have an internal temp sensor. It is mounted just below the valve body inside the trans. The pcm does use it to monitor trans temps, specifically when it is cold or running too hot and makes adjustments to the shift and lockup strategy accordingly.
 
Where would be a good spot to hook an external temp sensor to? I belive I have heard from you that there is not a eally good place. I just need something to tell me if something is wrong. It does not have to be a 100% accurate temp.
 
I have mine hooked up to a port by the shifter on top of the trans.....

not sure what trannyman recommends......

Interested in knowing as well. I have a scanner, but for times I don't have the scanner on, it is nice to have a general idea.
 
Using a scan tool is the best as the sensor is in a pretty good location. Threading it in to the pressure port on the top of the case never reads correctly and I often see the temps read up to 40 deg too high here because of heat soak as you are reading more actual metal to metal case temp than actual fluid temp. The pan is a good spot to put a temp sensor and I know Scotty was talking with me a while back about using one of the holes on the back of the case and drilling through into the back of the trans to put a sensor here and it would be a good spot also as it is just above the pan rail. A temp sensor wont tell you there is an instant problem going on as it takes a fair amount of time for the fluid to change temp.

I plan on trying that out as well when I put that sucker back together.
 


hi the k & w worked drained some fluid out put in the k & w shifts fine when cold .the must have be some build up on the solenoid.will change the fluid at 1000 mile.
